So, finals are here, uni is nearly over: what plans have your DC made for next year?

My DC are reaching the end of their fabulous first degrees and don't appear to be sharing their plans for next year with me!
What are yours going to be doing?

My dd is four months pregnant with our first grandchild, so once the exams are out of the way she'll be sorting out her new home and focusing on being a mum for next year!

Mine is hoping to do a PGCE next year so hoping to do some volunteering/get a job/travel a bit. In short, I don't think she knows.

I'm finishing a degree right now myself. I'll be freelancing, but most likely signing on and spending a few months getting over a horrendous, horrendous depression before going to my PhD next year. Some of my friends are doing PG cert or going to the states for Summer work.

Accepted (subject to a pass) to do Masters in international Journalism. Work experience at evening standard and three regional papers.

What a interesting variety!
I asked dd if the baby was going to arrive before or after the exams, just so that I could be prepared and we had everything out in the open, and got a very stern lecture on body image and feminism and not everyone looking like Hello magazine. She says she's doing a law conversion. Not sure about DS.

my DD of this age is heading for law school in September for a

GDL. and her okder brother is heading back to college after two gap years ( count them bank of mum and dad!) to do a science based Masters .
How time files !!

DS in this cohort but as a languages student has another year to go.

Best1West He is also intending to do a PGCE (Secondary MFL). Is your DD starting in 2014 or 2015? What will she do?

He's just back from teaching in France through the British Council - loved it - few hours, good pay and lots of opportunity to travel. He's off again today to Paris then Nice -it's alright for someGrin

fussy History, but she has a long term aim to go into SEN. She was hoping to do the PGCE this year but wanted to stay in Wales and they require a B in maths and English for PGCE . She's fine for the English of course but only managed a C at GCSE maths. So part of her plan is to resist it. Don't ask me why she couldn't have applied to an English college for PGCE where they only required a C.
Don't ask me why you need Grade B maths to teach History either.

So she's planning to try and do some voluntary work in schools to get some experience and get some kind of job whilst re sitting the maths.

Sounds like your DS has had a great year and got plenty of teaching experience into the bargain.
Her last exam is Wednesday, I think she will be sad to leave, she has loved it there. I recall our DCs are at the same Uni.

Best1sWest - think you're right re same uni. He's back in halls for his 4th year - in the new accommodation.
History is so popular - DS loves history but it's not his degree. Will she carry on at the uni or elsewhere in Wales? DS is thinking south west himself. That's really tough on her re the maths gcse - what a pain. DS has IGCSE English but not maths so has to hope they'll accept his foreign qualification or do an equivalence test which might limit his choices. He had an email just before he left this morning offering him a period observing next month - he was a bit gobsmacked as he only wrote to them last night!

DS2 is going to do an MSc. It has taken him a long time to catch up with his effortlessly clever elder brother but he has finally done so ... Provided that Bank of Mum pays out.

DD is off to do Teach First, she will be moving to London.

Are people's DC generally living at home/staying in their uni city for jobs or moving somewhere new?

dd is moving to her own mortgaged house in London (near us), her dh is luckily a bit older so was able to sell his old flat there. She is at uni in Durham but wouldn't want to live there afterwards, she misses the buzz of the capital.

DD1 is about to graduate from Glasgow with an honours degree in Theology and Religious Studies (exactly! WTF can she do with that!) She is hopeful of a First.

She has moved home and has a full time waitressing job to keep her in funds while she looks at what options are open to her. She doesn't want to do further study and has started applying for graduate jobs. I suspect living at home again will motivate her to find something very quickly.

DD doing GDL in London. That is where she wants to work and has the best chance of doing so. Not one of her friends is staying in the University city! After 4 years, they are moving on! Nearly all her friends will be in London. She is using our flat there.

Well done LWB DD1. DS2 just found out he has passed Dentistry finals today - such a relief. I have aged 10 years this week. He has a job starting September, so 10 weeks holiday starting today :)

Congratulations to all!

Eldest got results today. A first, top in the year and 88% for her dissertation which I believe is " bloody brilliant!" As she might say!

I'm so chuffed as she's loved pretty much every minute. I'd like to say again to the new applicants - an Oxbridge rejection isn't the end, but might lead to something better for you.

She's doing a masters and has tuition fee funding. For an arts subject that's a real success these days. I wouldn't be surprised if she stays in academia

My DS is starting his teacher training in September to be a secondary school computer science teacher . Results don't come out for us until next week .

Such an exciting time for you all.
This time last year I was so worried as DS2 had had a really nasty exam and he was really worried that he would get a 2:1 which he needed to secure his job.
He got his 2:1 and had a 4 month long fantastic summer until beginning of October. He went travelling for 6 weeks on West Coast USA with 2 uni friends and kept his money trickling in working at his bar job for the rest of the time at local race courses.
I agree with Thea in that an Oxbridge rejection never held either of my two DS's back.

Congrats everyone - so many firsts - what a clever bunch.
DS currently doing 4 weeks teaching observation/assisting in prep for PGCE then a nice summer planned.
