I have neither the time or childcare to do a course at the local college (I already work in the day and on Saturdays and dh teaches inthe evenings) but I could do with trying to get the acocuntants bill down by doing the books properly and having more of an understanding of stuff.

I don't want to be a chartered accountant just be able to produce a set of books. I think I would need some motivation rather than just buying a teach yourself book, someone to give me deadlines or assignements etc.

I'm currently doing a computer course with ICS (International Correspondence Schools). Their bookkeeping course is very popular. You work at your own pace and in your own time. It might be what you are looking for. You can find them on the web. I have had not problems with them and they mark my test papers very quickly (3-5 day turn around).
