Self catered accommodation for Freshers... Can anyone beat this?

I went with my DC to a post offer open day to a university in the Midlands today and their self catered accommodation varied from 8 to a kitchen, to 17 to a kitchen and finally 36 to a kitchen!!!!! Can anyone beat that? We were both astounded!!!

Obviously the kitchens were bigger as the ratio increased and they had more fridge/ freezer space but still a very small amount compared to other places we have visited. I know one has to sadly accept that petty pilfering of cheese/ milk etc goes on when you live in shared accommodation but can you imagine potentially 36 people after your milk!!!!!!

NB we didn't believe the student that told us the ratios so we had them confirmed at the accommodation information point!

That does sound a bit daft. It must be a huge room if it's 36 people to it. How many hobs do they have?

I had 80+ to a kitchen consisting of 4 fridges 2 hot plates a kettle and a toaster. This was in England in the late 90's

We had about 30 to a kitchen in the 90s but clearly we didn't store anything in it, that would be insane. Milk and butter in plastic bag out the window acts as a fridge in Newcastle for the 10 mth uni year!

I wouldn't be happy with that! DD2 is at Nottingham and they 6 to a kitchen (two large fridges) 2 bathrooms . DD1 had one bathroom but only 5 of them.

Even with 5 DD1 often had food go missing..can't imagine 36!!

In self catered accommodation that's bonkers. I've seen better ratios in catered accommodation.

However, I did once spend two months in a backpackers hostel with 410 people to one kitchen with 3 big fridges, 6 hob rings, two microwaves and one kettle. Let's just say that I appreciate having my own kitchen nowadays...

DS had 2 kitchens for 34 students but they each had a fridge in their own room.

Black your DS was lucky to be allowed to have a fridge in their room. They definitely weren't allowed one at at Keele yesterday and I know a few other places that say no as well. A small fridge in my opinion would make the large numbers possible. Many universities only allow fridges for medical need eg medication etc.
LRD I think they had 3 cookers in the largest kitchens but I can't remember to be honest..

Bubbles you are correct but they are not allowed mini fridges.

goinggetstough I agree with you about needing a fridge (and a kettle) if there are 36 to a kitchen. Can 36 individual pints of milk even fit in the communal kitchen fridge? Sounds like a health and safety risk.
DS had no kitchen or fridge in his first year but the hall was not self catering. Milk went in a carrier bag out of the window.

Goinggetstough the fridges were provided by the University!

There was no room to eat in the kitchens, just a couple of tables outside in a widened out corridor bit but they all seemed to muck in and loved it.

Well, living in the next road to Tottenham Court Road obviously has advantages and disadvantages! This was UCL by the way.
