Hi, dd is setting off later today for uni, she will be in a rented house with five other girls and she needs to sort out an internet connection. As she is the first one arriving the others have asked her to sort out the internet ( and it is the cheapest way of her talking to us ) . The thing is we dont live in the Uk and have no idea which one to go for so I wondered if you wise mumsnet people could advise us ? Are there any ones to avoid ?

Anything but Virgin. Horrendous customer service and our local MP is trying to bring them to Trading Standards because of the way they handled our student area.

Does she know older students who have already lived there? The best bet is to ask for recommendations locally, as different providers can vary massively by area, e.g. Sky was crap where my student house was, but is widely acknowledged as being the best in my hometown.

Thanks, Virgin was one of the ones that i thought would be ok :(.

It may well be where she is. Just, in the midlands, resounding no!

My DD1 used Virgin in her shared house last year and it was fine (cable) ..so I guess it is just luck of the draw where you are. We also use Virgin at home ..have had cable here for years, and again, have been very lucky..rarely had a problem.

However she is going to the far end of Cornwall on placement this year...we are thinking of 02 as an option as their broadband only seems reasonable.(If anyone has any horror stories please tell!)

O2 were our saviours Grin They brought us Facebook essential Internet research resources where Virgin failed. There must be a website somewhere where you can see reviews for different providers in different areas?

If not, that idea was mine and I copyright it forthwith Wink

Another virgin disaster here. I've used a 3 dongle that was enough for me but for a house you will be better with cable. I know someone with talk talk and they have had no problems.

DD1 and friends had a lot of trouble with virgin when they shared a house, but DD2 and her friends haven't had any trouble.

Thanks for all the replies- Thought that i would update you all, I think she is going to go with talk talk as they have a special deal on at the mo, so fingers crossed that she has no problems.

My DS had Virgin last year and it didn't let him down. He chose it because I was able to refer him, as a Virgin customer, so he got a good deal and I got a kick back.

I think there may be advantages of some providers, such as BT, in that they let you have free access to their WiFi networks when out and about, so that is something worth looking at.
