What qualifications do you need to become an MP?
This is a serious question, honestly.

None. You need to be a paid up member to a party and get really involved then party members in your constituency need to select you to represent them in an election and if you win the constituency election then you are an MP.

Most MPs are however highly educated and have life experience in something like Law or Finance (which considering the state of the country is surprising!). You need to have the respect of those around you and knowledgeable about local issues.

You don't need to be a paid up member to any party. You could stand as an independent.

Thanks to you both. I agree about the country being in a state too. But I suppose having highly educated MPs doesn't prevent the rest of the world butting in and messing things up financially, does it?
So it looks like a Law Degree could be useful then? Wink

Maybe consider a degree in economics? :)

I would advise doing something else for work then doing lots of campaigning/voluntary stuff for the party of your choice. All parties are desperate for people NOT from the usual finance/legal/political sphere, so if you were e.g. a nurse and also had good campaign experience you would have a great chance of getting selected.

You could stand as an independent but you would have almost no chance of getting elected to Westminster.

Don't put embarrassing videos on youtube or make dubious statements in public - I have seen good candidates deselected for embarrassing things like this.
