Have your DCs decided? Mine hasn't...

LondonMother that's a very nice choice. He should just be glad there isn't an A* for History lurking there somewhere - I expect next year it will be rather different.

Not sure if this is of any help but these are the vacancies for maths at Bath and Leicester according to the clearing tables published in The Independent

Bath 2011 - Nil
2010 results day G4GA G4GD
2010 results day +1 G4GA G4GD
2009 results day +1 G4GA G4GD

Leicester 2011 CFG0 G100 G101 G102 G103 G105 G107 G170 G171 G1F5 G1FM G1FN G1L1 G1N1 GG14 GGC4 GN13 all these courses were also available 2 days after clearing opened and also two days after clearing opened in 2010

York had several maths courses with vacancies on results day last year but looking at the tables, they'd all been filled 2 days later. Let me know if you want me to check a particular course code. I found it really helpful to have the tables when ds1 chose his courses

It certainly takes the pressure off a little bit, Yellowtip! He's doing four A2s, two of which are about threequarters done already, so fingers crossed the 3 As should be OK. The 3 As offer was one reason for going for Oxford rather than Cambridge, the other being that Oxford didn't want to see AS module marks and Cambridge did. His were good but not stratospheric and he thought it might count against him.

goingmadinthecountry · 15/04/2012 20:26

Dd1 firmed her choices about 6 weeks ago but is still getting come and join us emails from one she turned down. UCAS maybe isn't as joined up as it could be!

There wasn't much difference in her offers - 4 offered AAA and her insurance offer is AAB, though she's thinking if she doesn't get in to her first choice (she should) she'd rather apply next year for next year than go to a university she doesn't really really love.

goingmadinthecountry · 15/04/2012 20:27

Meant next year for a different subject - am listening to views of Angela Carter while posting!

Yellowtip · 15/04/2012 22:14

Prettier libraries for History too London Mother :)

DDs1, 2 and 3 operated on the same basis, with the same concerns about AS, though I think they all preferred Oxford anyhow, were familiar with it and all knew it was less cold (staying with a godmother in Cambridge with biting winter winds cutting in from Russia put them on the alert).

If DS2 can stop messing around so much then that reasoning would make sense for him too (also likely to be History, if he gets that far), because the HAT might give him a chance. Your DS must have impressed in that as well as at interview, regardless of AS results.

goingmad it may continue for a while: DD1 got the freshers pack from Durham (her insurance) after the August results. She had to phone the Law Dept to explain - all a bit odd, though they were very nice.

goingmadinthecountry · 15/04/2012 22:27

Just want to say I enjoyed Cambridge - though the fens do have a higher than average incidence of childhood deafness due to the wind.....

ucasfracas · 16/04/2012 14:02

Pros Leicester - nearer, cheaper to live, University near the town, town OK, seem really friendly and encouraging, lovely library, wide variety of students.

Cons Leicester - fellow would be Maths students, rather odd!

Pros Bath - very well regarded for Maths, beautiful town

Cons Bath - Uni a way out of town, despite its reputation for Maths people not in the know haven't heard of it. Narrower selection of students (no arts students). STEP!!! Less welcoming.

Most maths students everywhere tend to be rather odd, not just Leicester!!

The list is good - try to think of more points. It will help crystallise her thoughts.

ellisbell · 17/04/2012 12:09

Just to even it up :) Bath has good sports facilities, if she's interested. I believe it has low crime rates too.

Libra · 17/04/2012 12:33

DS1 has now firmed his unconditional for Dundee (medicine). Very exciting.
He had offers for Glasgow and Aberdeen as well, but liked Dundee the best when he went for interview.

I love the way he has already 'met' about 40% of his class through The Student Room and now Facebook.

ucasfracas · 17/04/2012 13:05

Not sporty at all really!

Likely to get involved in clubs/societies etc. though not sure which ones!

Peer group is probably what mine would put above absolutely everything else.

Yellowtip · 17/04/2012 13:17

In fact DD2 was more obviously gifted at a subject other than History but didn't apply because of the (stereo?)type of people doing that course.

ucasfracas · 25/04/2012 12:56

Well apparently it has been decided - Leicester!
