Took DS1 and 2, (10 and 12) and had a thoroughly enjoyable day.

Well done to everyone, staff and students (and the guest lecturer) for setting it up. Gave DS1 a chance to see a modern uni campus and to witness the enthusiasm of the students, and ever-so gently guide him towards a career in Engineering Grin. For they shall inherit the Earth!

That's fantastic. I studied at Southampton for 2 years (post-grad nursing) and it was an excellent place to be.

My ds is there on the first year of an engineering course and he loves it. It's a great place to study, and from his accounts, a great place to be a student.

Love that engineers will inherit the earth - he can keep me in my old age then Grin

Hi, what's he studying, if you don't me asking? Is there a 'general' course followed by specialisation or do they start on a specific course, iykwim?

MEng in Aerospace engineering & space craft design.

But you can do either a 3 year BEng or 4 year MEng in Mechanical Engineering and specialise part way through, DS knew what he wanted to study though so is specialising right from the start.

DS2 otoh is looking at the more general route.

Glad you enjoyed it.
Which guest lecturer?

Do not forget the Oceanography day next Saturday - tours of the Callista are the highlight

Ian B Dunne did the Science Magic shows, and we saw a demo and lecture about Lasers by a (female) lecturer at the uni. There were 5 other 'events' happening, four times over in rotation, but I couldn't raise sufficient enthusiasm for the Chemistry one; the boys had just been to Intech to the planetarium, the 'veg orchestra' was aimed at the younger kids and we'd've had to have been quick to sign up for the 'Blood on the Lab Floor' one which I assume was forensics.

How did your kids do on the mars bar bridge?
And did you see the rocket car?

LittenTree · 12/03/2012 21:33

Saw the rocket car (blimey- What IS it about blokes? Hey, how fast can this baby go?! etc) but the boys were sure they'd be rubbish at the Mars Bar bridge! Assuming mummy hadn't eaten the payload first, of course....

the man in charge of the rocket car sees in black and white - he has no colour vision at all
