adult illiteracy

Hi

Not sure if this is posted in the correct topic but would really appreciate any advice. My husband has real difficulties with reading and writing. He has attended a college course before which didn't really help as it was more of an english course and he really needs to start at the beginning with back to basics. I have also tried to help him but it is very difficult when you are close to the person and with me not being a teacher I really had no idea where to start. Ideally he needs one to one tuition - not sure if this is available? Or are there any materials anybody could recommend to help him learn at home.

This might be a good starting point. A college-based course or government funded Adult Learning course should also give him the opportunity to indicate an Additional Learning support need for which he may get some one to one support time or an LSA to work with him during the classes. Some Surestart centres offer basic numeracy and literacy for parents too.

Perhaps look for a private tutor? Either someone who works in FE or even a teacher. To be honest, any well educated adult with an interest in education would probably do, you may not need a specific tutor for English. He needs someone to encourage him to read, to digest what he has read and begin to write about it. Maybe try ringing the local secondary school to see if anyone does private tutoring.

I will look into both those options, have also phoned the local college this evening who are going to contact him to arrange an assessment.

Local dyslexia charity might be a good place to ask for help - some of them will run courses not only for diagnosed dyslexics but for anyone with a reading problem.
