My DD is going to Newcastle university. Unfortunately, my DH and I can't take her as we both have health problems. I am almost housebound at the moment and my DH can't drive for more than an hour or so. She can't manage to take all her stuff on her own and we don't know anyone else going there. I've rung several small removal companies and they charge at least £300! Can anyone help?

glad you're feeling happier now, mouldy Smile

Newcastle is a lovely city, DS1 just loves it, & the people are great.

DD has just finished a year in Ricky Road. She went equipped with pans, plates etc but they mostly came home unused as she found on arrival that the kitchen was well-stocked with such things.

It is a very short distance from Ricky Road into the city centre and there were many people heading to the shops on arrival day to buy bulky items such as quilts and pillows.

Best of luck to your DD.

Out of curiosity I just looked up Ricky Road charges on the uni website - £76.72 per week, 38 weeks, total £2,915.36

DS2 is going to Sheffield - they have some shared bathroom rooms, but not many, & he didn't get one, although he asked for it. Their contracts are for 42 weeks (no idea why so much longer) & the shared bathroom rooms cost between £3,272.22 & £4,139.52

Anyway he has been allocated an en-suite room & the rent for that, for 42 weeks, is £4,577.58 Shock. It is a huge amount more - £44 pw compared with Ricky Road! That's a lot of beer food & books

DD has chatted online to several people who will be going to Ricky Road, including 2 who have been allocated to the same flat as her! She's located the nearest Primark, Asda, Argos and Poundland stores to the university too.

Have a look at Uni Baggage.com-it might be useful at some stage.
