Bookkeeping / Accountancy qualifications - where to start ?!

I am thinking of switching careers to some sort of financial occupation (COMpletely fed up where I am).. was thinking of starting with bookkeeping with possibility of taking it further long term to some sort of accountancy training.
There's such a breadth of qualifications out there - ICB/IAB/C&G/AAT/OCR.... Can anyone give any advice as to pro's / con's of each ? Any better than others if you want to keep the option open to take it further ? Thanks.

Hi TheVanessa, this is my first ever post. I saw your posting from Sep last year . I am thinking of doing the ICB with Ideal Schools or Training Link . What level did you go to , did you get the AICB or the MICB. Can these qualifications enable you to run a bookkeeping business with no previous actual work experience

Hello Penni,

I'm sorry I didn't reply to your post, I've had a very busy few months, mainly off the back of my study. You've probably already made your course choice but I hope this is helpful. Through Ideal Schools I registered for their Career Path course option that takes me to Full membership and includes Self Assessment Taxation and Payroll Management. I made a great start and once I got to Associate Level I applied for my practice license then completed my Self Assessment Taxation qualification. Since them I've been fortunate to pick up 11 clients, which I'm over the moon with. I have to say that I had amazing support every step of the way from Ideal, although second half of study slowed slightly due to now juggling family & work. Not complaining though as that's exactly what I wanted from the outset.

I wish you every success :-)

Hi guys,
please advise. Do I have to a member of any accounting BODY ( ACCA or MAAT) to trade as a bookkeeper or run a limited accounting company?
