DH is studying for a HNC in Engineering. It's a 2 year course, one day a week as he works FT. Yesterday his lecturer gave the class a 16,000 word project that is to be handed in in 6 weeks time. Am I right is thinking this must be incorrect?

I'm a FT uni student and my dissertation is only 10,000 words and we have all year to do it. If it is wrong, where do we go from here?

Thanks

When I studied part-time on top of the day job my course lecturers were incredibly helpful in helping students. So long as I made the request in plenty of time, they were always willing to give extensions.

Thanks, thats an idea. Did you have any projects about that size? Maybe an extension could be the answer!

My dissertation was around 18,000 words and I probably did it in a couple of weeks as I left it to the last minute and took a few weeks off work to do it.

Thanks, I know that feeling!

It probably is right. Perhaps you can help with some reasearch for him if he explains it to you?

It's less than 3,000 words per week so the actual written amount is not too bad. That would be less than 500 words per day then.

Tell him to try to go about it in an organised way as this speeds everything up so much at the end. He should make a plan of what each section should contain and also do academic references (if required)as he goes along.

Ask him to find out if he can see someone's 16,000 word Engineering project from last year so that he can see what kind of thing is expected.

Tell him to be sure to BACK everything UP (on the computer) so that nothing gets lost as he goes along.

My son did a disseration for Engineering and it was tough at the beginning but got better as he went on.
