G&T DD Yr6 but school not doing much

Hi

My 11yr DD is on the G&T register but the school are doing nothing for her. I went to see her teacher who said they would try and give her extra things to do but I feel she needs a program - something she can follow at her own pace...or maybe to even go up a year. She goes to a middle school - maybe things will improve when she gets to yr7 but when I ask her what she has learnt at school she often says 'nothing' and genuinely means it - ie they're doing stuff that she's done before.

Any advice?

Speak to the school's Lead Teacher for G & T.
Is dd learning an instrument? If not, and if she has any interest in music, that would sstretch her. It would cost money though.

Keep on at the school about it!

My DSS has been on G&T since he was in juniors. His schools weren't exactly great academically anyway so he was coasting from the start. The main problem was that they were letting him get away with really poor effort in homework (rushing it etc). His A levels? He's heading for straight Es or thereabouts.

Obviously it's not entirely the school's fault (he doesn't exactly get a supportive environment at his mum's IYSWIM) but the school have totally failed him.

Thanks for your replies. I'm not even sure the school has a lead teacher...will check it out. She does learn the trumpet, and does loads of sport etc. But its academically I worry about her. We've even thought about private school but just can't afford it - plus also feel that school should be able to help. Not asking them to do everything, I'm happy to get involved but I'm not sure how to help her.

Is she in a band or orchestra playing the trumpet? It could be time for her to take up a second instrument. This would stretch her academically.

The school should have a lead teacher for G & T. If not you should ask why, because I believe it it a requirement.
