I am being unreasonable to expect only parents with so named 'G&T children to post on this thread

...I have 2 children ds and dd. DD has been 'officially' lisetd (for what that is worth) by the school. I never would have dreamed of posting on this thread if she wasn't listed as such.

As a mum I think both my children are fantatsic and 'gifted' in all sorts of ways - as I am sure we all do.

Isn't this topic supposed to be a helpline for parents of these listed children to give them ideas as to what the shcools ought to be doing and what as parents we can do to help these children achieve their potential.

Every now and again I look on the threads to see if there are any useful postings and it seems to be full of threads about 'is my child gifted???' 'he's reading ort dtage 8 at 2 is he gifted?'etc etc

peppered with postings from other irriated parents...

We'd not even considered this about our dd - the teachers at shcool call you in and tell you about htis list and that your ds or dd is on it - FULL STOP. You don't tell them, they know their job...

...sorry - I actually meant the one's who initiate the threads - not the ones who post on the threads - sorry...

ie really meant those that start 'IS my child gifted????' etc etc

Yes, and I meant that you can't dictate what people post where. Which includes starting threads.

So what about HE'd kids? No teacher to pull them in etc.... and just as likely to be G&T

Why does it bother you? G&T is not a matter of life and deat after all. It's just an aspect of a person. Do you feel some need for exclusivity? Perhaps you should apply to MN see if they will give the threads opt in status, same as the SN ones get, and see what reponse you get

...I thought G&T was a government made up label - and only schools applied it - to try and ensure that children are being stretched if they need to be.....never heard of it being used before the goverment introduced it.

Schools can't be relied on to pick up on such things. And would you say the same about someone posting similar in Special Needs, describing their child and asking for advice?

And personally I don't give a sod whether or not my child is gifted or talented, she is a child and as such should be encouraged to reach her full potential the same as every child.

It is valid for people to ask is my child gifted or very bright on this topic
because they are asking other people who may have G+T children, therefore it is comparative.

I think it is however unreasonable for people to post and say

Virgo - I'm one of those mothers who would start a thread 'is my ds gifted' purely because of something that was said at nursery a few weeks ago and I needed advice. I've taken advice from outside mn but the mere fact that you think that some parts of mn are an exclusive 'club' is rather pathetic and against the grain of what mn is for. I post on all sorts of topics if I feel I have something constructive to contribute, whether the topic applies directly to me or not.

Virgo, the term gifted has been around for years. My brother was considered gifted - he is now in his late 30s!

(and he wasn't btw, just advanced for his age)

It is of course also possible to be talented in a specific area and advice on that is equally valid surely? My ds1 is talented at a very high level in athletics 9the local club are trying to recruit him but sadly D works those hours- we're looking into optins). But he is far from talented across the board, indeed he has SN with learning difficulties.

I think the whole G and T thing is a bit daft anyway. They didn't have it when i was at school and it never did me any harm ( and I am sure would've been classified as such).

yes- I agree with you all I guess - just having a weeny rant and probably didn't word it very well...

I think it came off the back of reading the India Knight thread where there were some awful postings by fed up mumsnetters with the whole G&T thing - and that most of the threads don't seem to be about anything truly related to G&T issues.

To think about a toddler being G&T in anything is truly bizzarre to me but that is mho - don't shoot me down for that one..

Not interested about haveing a 'club' - just questioning the point of a topic list

Also don't forget that because of the system of a certain % being picked from each school that a child classed as G&T at one school might not be on the list at their next school. That doesn't mean that the individual child's needs have miraculously changed overnight. Their parents may still need advice.

There was one brilliant one conerning a realy talented chess player but most seem to be about parents asking others if they think their child is G&T - I mean how the hell can you tell without having met the child etc etc..

The way I see it, this is a public forum, and though I have never posted on a G&t thread, if I felt I wanted advice re: G&T then I probably would, does this mean people who aren't ttc shouldn't post on conceptuion? people who don't have children with alleriges shouldn't post on allergies? people who aren't pg shouldn't post on ante-natal threads? I could go on and on and on.
Reminds me of the complaints about men posting on MN because it was mumsnet.

But by that logic no one should ever post asking if their child might have SN or health problems. We can't see the child so how do we know?

If your child can recite the Greek alphabet, play harpsichord continuo and has War and Peace as a bedtime reader at the age of 2 then I'd say your child is gifted. Point is, sometimes parents just need to ask others for advice, and it may seem trivial and petty to an outside person but that doesn't make it any less relevant to the parent concerned.

Some toddlers do display their Giftedness at an early age but they are very rare. It's best to wait a few years and then you can distinguish between true cleverness and mere precociousness which will, by definition, eventually level out.

I disagree with the argument that "the teachers at school call you in and tell you about this list and that your ds or dd is on it - FULL STOP" Did you not read the article which said that 35% of Primary schools refuse to identify their G&T children?
