Name changed for this as some details may be outing.
My 3 year old really struggles with social interactions with people outside the family, particularly his peers. I think he has no idea how to relate to them and seems afraid of them. I don’t think there is any SEN there - it’s just painful shyness and probably a sense of otherness. I was very similar as a child and really feel for him.
Obviously with covid it’s difficult to facilitate opportunities for him to see other people. He’s going to preschool in September and I’d really like to help him with his social skills before he starts.
Does anyone have any tips on how to do this? Should we role play interactions? Try to teach him how to play?
The fact he is “gifted” might not be relevant at all, but it wouldn’t surprise me if these kind of social issues are common with bright children.
