Any clubs/schools/options for mathematically gifted children

Hi
My DS (he is 12) is really into maths and can do his school syllabus with his eyes closed. He is the best (by far) maths pupil in his year.
We will be thinking of the Maths school in London for 6th form but meanwhile he needs to be challenged and stretched in this area.

He does a lot of online stuff but I was wondering if there are any special maths clubs/schools? Any thoughts? Anybody else is dealing with this particular issue?

There is the Junior Maths Challenge. If his school do not do it, you could enquire if they would be willing to. You could also ask if he could be put in for the Intermediate Maths Challenge. Look on the UKMT website.

There is also a mentoring scheme they run. Again, details on the website.

The UKMT also run team challenges for year 8 and 9 pupils. If he can get a team of 4 together, he could ask the school if they could enter it. I think it is in Spring, but it would mean a teacher taking the team to a venue where they were holding the regionals in your area, so they may not be able to do this.

The Royal Institution does outreach courses for secondary age students in various places around the country. You could look on their website and see if any are in your area and for his year. Again the school needs to put the student for this, so it has to be done through school.

Slight divergence here,but in terms of clubs, have you a local chess club? Ideally, one linked in with a junior league. This would open up his social group and introduce him to others who may have similar interests,be involved in Maths clubs etc. Just a thought.
