G&T bookworm with kindle needing free ebooks

I have a 9 year old for whom we always need to back 20 or so books when going away as she reads constantly and fast. We have finally given in and bought her a kindle to make our life easier, but we are keen to explore ways to access free childrens books. She is mainly into modern authors and not many of those are available for free. I think she would be more willing to explore older authors if these were recommended by her G&T peers (who might also have kindles)... any suggestions of e-books which are free and best websites to get them off ?

god, it hadn't occurred to me to get them kindles. might save the endless library and amazon issue. clearly i have no idea what's out there wrt to kid's/ young adult books, had assumed it was mostly adult, so marking with interest. i don't think i know any kids with kindles, will be interesting to see!

'Little Women' is free on Amazon - just finished re reading it myself and remembered what a great book it is.

There are a ton of classics on Amazon for free right now for the Kindle. It was a bit awkward to find for me personally because they are apparently anti advertising these are free so here: www.amazon.co.uk/Adventures-Sherlock-Holmes-ebook/dp/B000JQU1VS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1314815058&sr=8-2

To find more, just look at the "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought" list for more. And there are different ones in that particular list when you click on the various books.

As for the modern...if you find any please let me know where!
