Gold fillings/onlays=old gimmer?

One of my back molars (5th tooth backwards if I count from the front)has a huge filling and it broke recently.
My denist recommended a gold filling/onlay as it will last a long longer/ is stronger etc...
However will it look awful? I have spent a lot of time recently looking at peoples teeth and I have noticed a lot of gold fillings/onlays but only on older people, I am 42 and feel I am hurling towards middle age

Anyone got a gold filling / onlay? and has anyone experienced the electric current that can result from interactions between the metals and your saliva, resulting in discomfort "galvanic shock."??

You'd fit right in with rappers.....I only have attractive amalgam ones I'm afraid.
