Teething? Temp of nearly 41?

Ears clear, chest clear, throat clear, but DS has high temp (which is just about being controlled with paracetamol and nurofen). Was sick this morning, but that was because he was hot, don't think he has a bug as nappies have been OK and not been sick again.

Temp has gone up steadily through the day (was 39.4 this am, but up to 40.8 this afternoon ).

Will take a urine sample to the doctor tomorrow (if DS will provide one...!) as he has had a urine infection in the past, but the last temp he had, his urine sample was fine.

So, can teething really cause such high temps? Or should I be pressing for further investigations? What could it be? Poor little chap is very miserable, but being very brave and good

I think that's too high for teething

Dd has a habit of getting high temps like this (has he had such a high temp before?)

I would sponge him down a bit but most likely it's one of these nasty viruses going around and in a day or so he'll probably come out with some sort of symptom

I would keep a close watch on him for other symptoms though

He hasn't been running around in the heat or anything (thinking heatstroke)?

Thanks, FIS - no, DS doesn't run around (not walking yet - is 16mo) - and this isn't the first time it's happened - it seems to be every couple of weeks atm It's been 40.9 before, about four months ago, when he had his first UTI - so worried it's another one. But last time he had a high temp (40.3), his sample as clear.

is it that high after paracetomal AND nurofen?

if it is I would take him to A&E to be honest

AM, yes, it could be another UTI He wees for England (except with his nappy off...then it takes ages to catch a sample!) and has drunk loads today, though hardly eaten (bit of yoghurt, some cheese, a biscuit or two - not like him at all).

I took him to the doctor this morning, always do when his temp rockets like this - they just say "It's one of those things, could have a virus, might be teeth, go away" - said very kindly, but not much help. He's scared of hospitals and doctors since his kidney examination (which looked clear) the other week

unfortunately, we had a spate like that with dd when she was about 1. First time it was a UTI but all subsequent tests came back clear even though she had the high temp. I think she had one of these weird viruses like roseola although she never had a widespread rash.

Would def take a urine test in and then wait it out and see what happens (unless he gets any worse).

Could be a viral infection (my ds1 sometimes gets viral infections and runs very high temps with no other symptoms). We just have to keep his temp down and wait. Can last up to 5 days.

Could it be chickenpox? ds1's temp went the highest it's ever been when he had CP (about 41C).

Poor mite, hope he's better soon. Would definitely consult a doctor if he's still running temps like that by tomorrow, even if it's viral and there's nothing they can do it's better to get him checked out.

He is asleep atm - fell asleep with a vest on, but is in a cool room. Will strip him off and sponge him when he wakes. Will ring NHS Direct if he is hot again in the night - I have one more paracetamol dose and one more nurofen dose I can give him before midnight tonight.

No rash (have been checking him for spots as obviously am paranoid mother worried about meningitis).

remember to sponge with luke warm water not cold otherwise it makes it worse

high temps are good in terms of throwing off viruses.It's just the immune system working. DS1 has laways run high temps seemingly randomly- think they are viruses tbh, although when he was a baby they usually meant ear infections. . I would get a urine sample checked just because he has had previous uti's though.

if his temp doesnt go down a degree, take him to hospital as he is quite young, hopefully though, if you keep the fan on him, sponge down with tepid water and keep him undressed, then his temp should reduce, give calpol too, if temp goes down, then just ring gp in morning.

oh and bear in mind temps go up naturally in the evening- usually peak around midnight. If you give calpol/nurofen then hwe should get a cool few hours after then a be able to sleep well.

Thanks again - I've googled temperatures and teething and found that teething never causes temps over 39... But anecdotally, I've heard different (the GP and pharmacist today both said it could).

I'll see how he is. He's still asleep, so think he's possibly got some other virus. No doubt he will wake in the middle of the night, hot and fretful - so although he hates it, he will be sponged, and he can have some more medicine then too.

He seems much better today. I'm sure it's teething (I hope it is as anything else will require further investigation and he's scared enough of doctors as it is!).

Poor baby - he was SO good - just cuddled his bear and looked at me with big eyes. He did wake in the night, hot, but not as hot as yesterday afternoon. And temp was 37.1 this am! Hooray!

No doubt it will happen again soon though Still, only another eight teeth to come through!

Oh Hunker, this is so similar to DS except he wasn't as hot as yours but very poorly. Like yours too, he's all better today but we know there'll be another bout sometime soon. They've such a lot to contend with, haven't they. Little growing boys..
