Sore mouth and gums...any ideas?

This is a bit weird. My gums around one tooth have been sore for about a week. They did this briefly once before, about 2 weeks ago, but it went away when I used Corsodyl (mouthwash).

This time that doesn't seem to be cutting it - there is an odd taste sometimes, they are bleeding when I brush (don't usually) and I have also been feeling quite under the weather.

I went to the dentist on Monday in case it was a gum infection but he took an x ray and just said he thought it was a poorly fitting crown, and should be OK with some special gel.
However the glands under my chin are swollen, as well - he didn't think it was related but it happened at the same time - and they've been up for a week as well.

I have a bit of a summer cold/cough thing so maybe it is a separate virus or something, but my mouth is so sore - it feels kind of like a burn.

I am thinking possibly some kind of vitamin deficiency could cause this...but would be really grateful for any other ideas.

Thanks for reading.
