2nd smear results clear so why am I bleeding?

I only had a smear 6 months ago but had another as I bleed after sex.

Its come back clear.

So why am I bleeding?

My GP says it may be the pill causing my cervix to grw extra cells that bleed during sex.

I've stopped the pill for a 7 day breal but feel reluctant to re start it if it is the cause of the bleeding.

I had something similar in my early twenties. Did your GP mention cervical erosion? Pill can cause this, but its reasonably easily treated.

As I said on the other thread: there are other reasons for bleeding. The GP should be doing other investigations not doing another Pap test when your last one was only 6 months ago.

Is your GP proposing to do anything else? e.g. high vaginal swab, referral to GU, referral to gynaecology or colpscopy. A pap test is not an appropriate test for post coital bleeding, as stated in the NHS Cervical Screening guidelines see section 4.11 Women with symptoms page 16.

It may well be due to OCP use which can cause increased development of the ectropian aka erosion (which will bleed more readily. Colposcopy can treat this with cautery and stop the bleeding. If your GP hasn't referred you to colposcopy or gynaecology then they should certainly think about it.

I haven't seen her yet, shes off work now for a week. Whats OCP?

Thanks for replying, I will go see the GP again after she gets back

OCP = oral contraceptive pill. Sorry went into work/abbreviation mode.

disenchanted3, saw other thread and had to reply again as I think your are very worried.

I remember when I had bleeding after sex in my early twenties I was teriffied it was something serious.

try not to worry and go see your GP again and ask for a gynae appointment as Bela suggests, I got referred straight away but it took several weeks for an appointment.

bleeding due to cervical erosion brought on by the pill is very very common and not serious. as far as I remember it is some of the more fragile inside cells of your cervix protruding. they are more suceptible to infection or being traumatised during sex and bleeding. (not guaranteed this is your problem, but is a stong possibility).

GP referred me to gynae and I had a colposcopy (small camera inserted to see cervix and what was going on). they gave me a local anethesic injection into my cervix, took a small biopsy and then cauterised/sealed it. was totally painless at the time and a little uncomfortable when anathestic wore off later, but in no way painful.

it was actually quite interesting in a weird way as I got to see the whole thing on the camera on a TV!

try not to worry.
