Ive felt grotty for three or four days, spots are coming out now....i was around a poxy child a couple of weeks ago.
BUGGER BUGGER BUGGER. Next week I am meant to be making an eighty year olds cake and a three teired cake for a wedding party......the wedding one is for a friend but the other one is paid work. I read that five days after the spots come out, i wont be contageous any more...which takes me to tuesday. I COULD get the cakes done...but will i be really ill still, or will i be too scabby???
Oh god, I really dont want to cancel with a weeks notice ,

erm, you're probably in for a bit of a shit time tbh. I wouldn't make the cakes either- would you want to eat a cake made by a poxy person??
Tbh, the thing you need to be dong is an online shop to be delivered tomorrow, and organise someone to do the school run for you. And hire a friend to shout 'unclean, unclean!' and ring the bell 5 steps ahead of you should you dare to go out. I hadn't appreciated how serious chicken pox is to so many people before my dd had it when I was pg and had a horrible day of worry after my mum told me I'd never had it. Turns out I've got the immunity from somewhere thank god, but really, you need to be staying away from other people, and certainly not feeding them

moaningminniewhingesagain · 18/06/2010 10:23

Have you seen/spoken to the GP?

They will normally offer medication to lessen the severity of the pox for adults, best started ASAP if it's an option.

AFAIK adults tend to be poorlier than kids.

Thanks for the advice. I have definitely got it. Spots started apearing yesterday morning, i have a few on my head and round back of ears and about five on my tummy. I feel poorly but not dreadful. Do you think it will get worse, how long does it take to reach a spotty peak? So far im wondering wether i am going to get it mildly...
I didnt know the gp could prescribe something, i wasnt goingto go as didnt want to pass it on to anyone, was just gong to sit it out and see how i am by the end of the weekend....i wonder if i give him a ring, he will advise me? Our surgery is a nightmare - no appointments system which means you go and wait your turn, ive been sat in there for 2+ hours waiting to see the doctor before!!

Definitely ring the surgery and do not go in and wait. My dh had it when ds did, he was really quite ill with it and was in bed for a couple of weeks. The doctor gave him an anti-viral but I think we left it a bit late as it is much more effective given at the beginning.

Hopefully you will get it mildly.

As an adult with chicken pox you could be really ill for a couple of weeks or so. In children the worst dy is normally around day 4 but I'm not sure in adults, just that everyone I know in RL who has had it as an adult has been very sick. Give the GP surgery a call (but yes, don't go in and infect everyone) and ask about antivirals.

Whereabouts are you? Could you find another local cake decorator to cover for you? I would make a working assumption that next week you will be both really ill and too scabby to make the cakes.

Make sure you have food in the house. Do you have someone to help with your DCs or who you can call on in an emergency if you get too sick to manage?

geraldinetheluckygoat · 18/06/2010 12:00

ok am going to ring the surgery...

Thanks for replying on my thread. If it were possible I wouldn't let you swap your pox with my DS who is well.

Just wondering, can you pass CP on in cake?

MaryBS · 18/06/2010 12:03

DH was given an antiviral, and it cleared up in no time.

geraldinetheluckygoat · 18/06/2010 12:11

lol hobgoblin!
right. have rung. Doctor said no to antivirals. He said in five days its absolutely fine to make cakes if i feel ok, you cannot pass on cp via cake. I will use my own discression with this - at the moment i have very very few spots, mosly on back of neck and a few on my tummy. arms and hands clear. He said keep away from pregnant women in the mean time which i knew.
Honestly I really dont feel too bad at the moment - am taking ibuprofen which is controlling aches and pains, am a bit hot and a little itchy. I felt worse before the spots came out...tomorrow will be 3rd day after spots have appeared, so we'll see, i will probably be covered!!

that was obv. meant to say would

geraldinetheluckygoat · 18/06/2010 12:21

BitOfFun · 18/06/2010 12:21

I've had it as an adult, and I honestly felt ok. Slightly grotty as you say, but no worse than a bad cold or something. I was away for a week, and didn't even have a day in bed or anything. Just don't scratch!

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 18/06/2010 12:23

Hope you are one of the lucky ones!

geraldinetheluckygoat · 18/06/2010 12:27

Bitoffun, thank god - am aiming to get the same strain as you! To be quite honest, i could probably soldier on and be downstairs with dh and ds and even stack the dishwasher, put washing in and so on....but I am insisting on 2 days in bed to aid fast recovery. In reality it is wonderful to be sitting in bed with laptop, being brought boiled eggs and bowls of peaches and other ill food!

ProfessorLayton, thanks for suggestions...I dont know any other decorators, but my local cake making shop might know of one, they seem to know everyone cakey. Ive somewhat undercharged for this cake though as im a fool and didnt realise quite how much work it would be, so a replacement baker might charge a lot more. school runs are being covered by dh today and monday, who has taken some leave and is secretly pleased as he and ds2 are about to watch the football together...
