Irritated scalp - can I use tea tree oil?

Recently my scalp has been really itchy and flakey, I mentioned it to my mum, and she said that she had the same thing and the hairdresser recommended some tea tree shampoo.

I tried some and it did make it better, but it costs a small fortune. I have some tea tree essential oil, but I know that essential oils can burn the skin unless diluted.

Does anyone know if it would be effective if I mixed it with olive oil or something? I'd obviously have to wash it out after a bit, so would it be worth it? or are there any other handy cheap tips for sorting it out? It's driving me up the bloody wall! Gah!

TIA

Most oils are blended anyway but you can mix with almond oil (about £1 for a bottle from any pharmacy) or you could use olive oil / sunflower oil. It might be worth trying a shampoo without any SLS in it - Sodium Laureth Sulphate is in most shampoos etc and is a skin irritant (Google it too see). Naked shampoos are SLS free, available at Boots and are around £3.99

Thanks, I'll try that as well. Anything to stop it itching.
