Removal of Mirena Coil

I have just been to the doctors to have my mirena removed and the nurse and doctor couldn't find it, they spent 20 mins trying to find it and now I feel battered and bruised inside. I'm sure I would have felt it coming out, so does that mean its lodged in a weird place. They are sending me for a scan to try and locate it. Has this happened to anybody else?

Yes, me!

Mine disappeared about 5 months after it was put in. I only checked it occasionally, then one day it wasn't there

I too had an ultrasound scan, it was where it should be, just that the strings had been eaten by my uterus slipped inside somehow. Still works fine, that was about 7 months ago now.

Only hitch is, that I daren't think about how it will get removed, I suspect it will be a GA job

moaningminniewhingesagain · 14/06/2010 17:33

Oh sorry, i just realised you were trying to get yours out. I am only guessing about the GA, I haven't actually asked

LynetteScavo · 14/06/2010 17:34

Oh no! Now mine is in how will it ever get out?

moaningminniewhingesagain · 14/06/2010 17:39

Usually they just pull out gently by the strings, this only happens when it has slipped

pilates · 14/06/2010 20:51

MMWA - how do you check yourself? I thought it would be inserted too high to be felt.

I think you check by feeling for the strings and not the coil itself

boogywoogy · 14/06/2010 21:16

I had this recently, a nurse at my practice couldn't find the strings and neither could a doctor at the fp clinic where I had it fitted. I had a scan and this found it to be in the right place still so that was fine. They tried to pull the strings down with a gadget but no luck.

When I needed it removing my GP said he would have a go and if no luck would give me some local anaesthetic and then if no luck I would have to go to the hospital where they would 'give me a whiff of gas' and get it out.

He managed to get it out without the need for anything else.

Sorry that you have had a horrible time with yours.

I have the same problem with my copper coil. I used a mooncup one day and my uterus contracted very strongly and pulled the strings up inside the uterus.

I had to go for a scan after the family planning doc couldn't retrieve it.

It is possible to retrieve the strings using a little brush type device, but I haven't returned to the clinic after chickening out, so I don't know how good this method is.

pilates · 15/06/2010 09:53

AS - thats what I'm frightened of - would you be put out to retrieve it do you think?

OP posts:
atomicsnowflake · 15/06/2010 16:29

No, they don't put you out to use the brush retrival method.

If that failed and they needed to delve around a bit, then you'd get a general anaesthetic because they'd need to dilate the cervix in order to find it.

boogywoogy · 15/06/2010 16:38

I think that a GA must be a last resort though - see my earlier post

I had this happen to me back in January.I had the coil fitted in November last year and went to Dr's to get it checked out and for a smear at the same time when the Dr announced that she could not find it anywhere. She booked me in for a scan to try to find out where it had disappeared to but 3 days before scan it fell out when i went to the toilet.I was rather shocked that it just fell out like that but glad to be rid of it cos it just didn't agree with me at all.Perhaps all the Dr's poking about it there had dislodge it or perhaps it wasn't in the right place the whole time who knows. My point really is that it could of came out without you noticing or has become dislodged.
