A couple of questions about concussion.

Can concussion start hours after a bang to the head? Also can the symptoms come and go?

Ds had a fall at school yesterday morning, was fine during rest of school day but sore head, nauseous early evening. No dizziness, still ate all his dinner, no tiredness, although he was very quiet and spent the evening on the sofa watching tv and playing the computer.

Felt sick and complained of a sore head again this morning, but refused to take the day off school. He said he's felt fine all day at school but he's now feeling sick again (though still asking whats for dinner) and his head is really sore. He also says he's feeling cold. He's now telling me he doesn't actually remember falling (he was accidently knocked down a few steps).

Does this sound like concussion? Or just a wee bug that happened to coincide with the fall. Told him I wanted to take him to emergency doctor but he's adamant he doesn't want to go as he'd miss doing his school show tonight.

He's 10 btw. I gave him 2 calpol melts last night, and he's just taken another 2.

I would at least call NHS Direct but personally I'd go to A&E to be sure. The usual advice my Mum got (from my days of falling off bikes and out of trees - not at the same time) was to come straight in with any nausea or dizziness. He's got a clear symptom. It may be coincidence but that's easier for the doctors to decide.

Thanks.

I called nhs 24 before the school show and typically he suddenly started to feel better. Just as ds2 decided he had a headache and felt sick.

Both went to the school show- both fine afterwards- there is a bug going round the school according to ds2's teacher so think they both have a touch of that.

That's a relief. Funny how a sickness bug can seem like a good thing. Hope it passes quickly, so to speak.
