Renal Pelvis moderately dilated on 20 week scan!

Had 20 week san and all is well apart from the left renal pelvis is 6mm. The right is fine at 2.5mm.
I am having to go back at 32 weeks for another scan.
Has anyone had this and has returned to normal at 32 weeks?

Sonographer did say that the protocal for this is changing in August and had I presented in August it would have been ignored as top range changing from 5 to 8. Did set my mind at ease a little bit.

Hi, we had this picked up on 20 week scan as well and it turned out to be nothing to worry about.

Protocol here was just to re-scan after birth, and we have had several scans since (he's almost 2). The kidney is still enlarged but they can't see any problems with it and it has caused no medical problems ie it appears to be healthy, just enlarged. I guess it's something dp or i could have as we've never been scanned for anything.

I know of another mum who had the same thing with her son, he was put on antibiotics at birth as a precaution (as was protocol where she lived), and he had scans too. I think it's the same situation, no problems with the kidney (he's not on ABs anymore) but it's still a bit enlarged.

Basically there's a very high chance that this is just one of those things that gets picked up on scans but doesn't cause any problems, so try not to worry (hard, I know).
Incidentally it's much more common in boys, do you know what you're having?

Glad your little man is okay
Thank you for your reply.

This happened to me with DD2. It was still slightly over at the 32 week scan. After she was born they checked for wet nappies and discharged her. All that worry for nothing

hi, i had this with DD. she was scanned at birth and given ABs immediately for 7 days with a syringe .
then re-scanned after ABs ended and she was fine. there have been no problems since and she is 6yo now

Sorry to hear that, and hoping that much of it can be put down to baby's general increased size.

My DS will be 16 in Nov and also had this diagnosed at our 20 wk scan. He had a small daily dose of antibiotics for 6 months after his birth just in case of a urine infection (it was felt he might be able to 'hold onto' his wee for longer than most babies). We had a very detailed scan at 6 months - he had to drink some special solution and it was tracked through his kidneys - and all was working well. No problems since.

I do know what its like to be pregnant and worrying so wishing you all the best.
