painful vein in leg - burst vein?

Woke up this morning with a raised, itchy painful vein on the side/back of my leg just below my knee. VERY tender to touch/bend my leg.
Went to out of hours GP at local hospital who can't see me for another 2 hours so I am home again and worrying.
The vein has changed now and is flatter and looks like a large bruise - maybe has it burst in some way.
Still tender to touch and generally achy.

Anyone else had this and can advise me as to what to expect?

Could be phlebitis. I think you need to go back to the OOH GP.

It needs looking at ASAP. Could you have been bitten by something? It could be an infection so it needs looking at before it spreads.

Thanks very much.

Just back from the hospital. I have phlebitis (well done DaisymooSteiner) Told to take a couple of days off, keep my leg elevated and keep a cold compress on it and hope it all calms down. If there's no improvement I may have to have a course of jabs with blood thinning drugs

Ooh, poor you, that's not nice!

Dh is on warfarin for 6 months and its a real pain because you cannot do any vigorous exercise, and have to have constant blood tests while they tinker with the dose.

Hope you leg sorts itself out quickly.
