My parents have it several times a day for about 50 years. They are 87 and 79 so it can't be that bad.

atomicsnowflake · 20/05/2010 16:03

I can't have aspartame because it makes me sick, dizzy and irritable.

atomicsnowflake · 20/05/2010 16:04

I also never give artificial sweeteners to my kids. They're banned in our house.

EccentricaGallumbits · 20/05/2010 16:05

but aspartame tastes goood.

bibbitybobbityhat · 20/05/2010 16:09

Just search the archives on Mumsnet for info on aspartame if you don't want to trawl around in Google. There are quite a few threads on the subject, some quite recently, with useful info and articles linked in.

We try as far as we can to avoid aspartame in this house too. I might have a can of diet coke about twice a month, but I never give it to the dc.

aspartame is banned in several countries, and has now changed its name to try and get away from all the bad press it has received

there are NO artificial sweeteners in my house. sugar, in moderation, is far better IMO

thisisyesterday · 20/05/2010 16:14

pippop1, i know someone who has smoked 20 a day for the last 60 years

smoking can't be that bad either!!!

IndigoSky · 20/05/2010 16:14

Tis the devil's work. I am still addicted to a can of diet coke a day but never give aspartame etc to my dc if I can avoid it.

Chil1234 · 20/05/2010 17:41

IMHO anything with 'artificial' in the title has to be suspect if you're aiming for a healthy diet. Same goes for most fake foods making health-claims, for that matter. Won't kill you in small amounts but, if you can live without it, why bother?

cocolepew · 20/05/2010 17:51

(II gave it up 6 weeks ago, I drank one diet coke and about5 pints of squash a day. I feel so much better, my constant headache is gone

maltesers · 21/05/2010 11:07

ah, interesting Cocopew !
I have thrown the sweetener in the bin. and its Day 2 and have had brown sugar in tea and coffee!

Ditch the sugar in the tea and coffee next. Tastes horrible for a day or two but you'll be amazed at how quickly you get used to both drinks in their 'natural' state....! No aspartame and no refined sugar = best of both worlds

maltesers · 23/05/2010 19:03

yes true, i actually had a cup of tea this afternoon with no tea in it and survived !! lol
