"Pine Mouth" - anyone had this hideous persistent aftertaste thing caused by pine nuts?

I noticed the other day that my toast tasted disgusting at breakfast time, and then my lunch tasted disgusting, and even fresh things from unopened packets tasted foul, with a really nasty bitter aftertaste.

After 24 hours of it I obvioulsy started to assume I had some sort of hideous disease or was beign slowly poisoned by my fillings - but on googling it turns out that lots of people have had this after eating chinese pine nuts, and it can last for up to 2 weeks!

It's hideous. Has anyone else experienced this - and if so, any ideas how to get rid of it?!

Yes!!! I had it about a month ago!

There is no cure. Sorry! It will go in about 4 or 5 days, but until then, you just have to put up with it.

It is truely awful and I feel for you!

peggotty · 16/05/2010 20:07

How odd! WHat is it about chinese pine nuts that causes it?

BrokenDoll · 16/05/2010 20:10

There were some pine nuts recalled recently iirc from another thread. Sainsburys i think. Because of the aftertaste not anything else.

bintofbohemia · 16/05/2010 20:10

Maureen - oh god I hope it goes in 4-5 days - am on about day 3 and it's rubbish. Spose it might mean losing soem weight though?

I just googled something about ginger and charcoal tablets helping so I'm going to try that. It really is grim. And I don't understand how it works, is it a saliva gland thing, or does it affect your brain?

peggoty - dunno, it's odd, no one seems to know. Could be the type of nut, could be the storage? I think mine were from Aldi so they were cheapo, maybe that makes a difference as I've never had anything like this before.

Yes I had it too. Its horrid isn't it?

There has been a few threads or mentions about it on here

MaureenMLove · 16/05/2010 20:17

The only thing that I could do was keep drinking water in between mouthfuls of food. It really is the most disgusting thing.

For those of you that don't know, and this is probably TMI, it's like that taste you get after you've thrown up so much, the only thing that you're bringing up is yellow bile!! That taste!

Massive sympathy for bintofbohemia, please people!

bintofbohemia · 16/05/2010 20:24

Thank you everyone. I will let you know whether chewing ginger works in case anyone is ever afflicted again.

(I am never eating pine nuts again ever, it's just not worth it.)

Out of interest how many pine nuts did you eat? I use them often in salads, but obviously you're not eating loads of them.

bintofbohemia · 16/05/2010 20:29

Not many - that's the mad thing. I gave some to my kids (who fortunately wouldn't eat them!) and I had a few as I was making their tea.

You had the one bad one! DH and DD both had some from the same packet as me and were completely fine!

It's a shame really, because I love them and the after taste has made me never, ever want them again!

bintofbohemia · 17/05/2010 08:39

Well, I tried the ginger thing, it was rank and hasn't helped! So into day 4 of the grimness...

I had this with some cashew nuts the other day too... Lasted about 3 days but it was vile.

bob do you think chewing parsley would help? I know it's a "cure" for the smell of garlic but may be worth a try?

BendyBob · 17/05/2010 08:51

Urgh this sounds horrible.

I'm wondering though, as I have a lot few pounds to lose, whether eating some might be a good thing in my case.

bintofbohemia · 17/05/2010 10:47

Belle I will try it. Oddly salad leaves taste alright so will give it a go.

Bendy - don't do it! Not worth it (and I don't think it's worked in my case anyway!)

It took me a while to eat them again after I had it. I do eat them now though.

It all started when I had a few toasted and sprinkled onto a pasta dish.

bintofbohemia · 19/05/2010 08:15

Oh my god, it's still here. Fading, but still here.

I realise this was an old thread but my DD got this recently. She had a headache and felt a bit ill the had a really bad bitter taste in her mouth. After a few days I tried to look into it and discovered " pine mouth" is a thing (and talked about on MN here and other threads). However after contacting Sainsburys to tell them the pine nuts I bought there had had this effect on DD they eventually get back to me and say it is impossible that this happened. Err It did happen and I know it did and it lasted for 2 weeks. I am absolutely furious that they have said this. The pine nuts are the ones from China and it definitely DID cause DD to get pine mouth. I had never heard of it and just wanted them to be aware that they may have a problem with the supply of pine nuts from China. Really bloody annoyed with what they said. I don't see how they can state that it is impossible - I saw it with my own eyes and DD had never heard of it either before we looked into it.
