Does anyone have any experience with taking Amitriptyline tablets?

The consultant/Doctor at the hospital has prescribed them 10mg, one a night for 2 weeks and then 2 a night until I next see him. He explained they were an anti depressant but they were being used as pain relief. It says nothing about pain relief in the leaflet and tbh some of the side effects are very scary with my history. Dh is researching the tablet today but surely it is okay for me to take them if the doctor has prescribed them? He knows I am on AD's already and that I have asthma.

I took them for itching caused by shingles. Doc said nobody knows how it works for itching but it really did. Knocked me out good and proper though!

I took them successfully for Trigeminal Neuralgia (nasty headache!), but when given them again for a trapped nerve 10mg didn't help & 20mg put me into space & I couldn't function.

Recently I had a LOT of nerve pain/problems and refused Amitriptyline but successfully took Pregabalin (Lyrica), which is also used a lot for nerve pain, like Gabapentin.

Just took my first one. Bit nervous.

I take them along with Tramadol and Naproxen for my back. The doc said they were a muscle relaxant to help with muscle spasms.

I'm not sure which of the tablets causes it, but I do get a dry mouth and dry eyes, but they do take the edge off the pain so it's swings and roundabouts. I am fairly crap in the morning though. I had to ring me Ma this am as I was having a breakdown!

I took my first tablet last night, rather apprehensively, and have felt crap all day.

My mother is addicted to them...along with cocodamol.

I would approach with caution

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 07/05/2010 17:38

Oh shit.

What choice so I have, though?

Sorry my post was a bit brash.

They must work for some people, my mother is nothing to do with you. If you have been prescribed them then go ahead.

Have taken them in 10 mg dose for sleeping problems.. And dh has along side sleeping and other pain relief when he had a really nasty Injury. Both of us managed to wake up for the children no problem through the night and neither of us felt dodgey in the morning.

Another one here on 10mg for pain relief

my gp says they rarely prescribe them for depression/anxiety as in high doses the side effects start to outweigh the benefits- he says at their practice they prescribe them almost totally as pain relief/muscle relaxant

take a bit of getting used to but after a week or so they're fine, ime. I think they're great- plus I used to have a lot of difficulty sleeping (not that I ever mentioned this to the gp) and now I sleep well- I'll wake up if the kids do, but otherwise I sleep right through

j0807bump · 07/05/2010 23:30

was on 50-75mg before pg for anxiety and sleeplessness. they fuzz you up a bit, not really dopey.

would caution that they do have an addictiveness, for myself at least but that could well be the difference between taking a low dose for pain and a higher dose to get, well, a bit spaced. if it stops you feeling anxious you get anxious about not having it.

i think i will be going back on them though, they are the only ones i've tried that do something for my symptoms.

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 08/05/2010 16:51

I really hope I get used to them soon as I am not good today. I was having real trouble getting up today and didn't until about 11. I was really stiff. Have felt weird for most of the day and just want dinner and to veg on the sofa.

Fab - how are you today? Is this your second/third one that you have had? I think you might feel a bit spaced for a few days, especially if you take them with other meds. If after a week you still feel like that then go back. remember though that just because one or two people on here have had bad experiences that you might not, your body might adjust to tkaing them and you'll be fine, we are all different.
try not to sit aorund waiting for an effect

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 09/05/2010 13:40

Hi

I have had 3 tablets now. I woke up very stiff around my middle again this morning but feel less weird though my head is still cotton woolly at times.

Haven't read all posts but wanted to add my experiences of this drug, I was prescribed it as a medication for depression and migraine (2 birds, 1 stone type thing)

while on it I was sick, groggy, spaced out and very low. All of this was bearable until i suffered a grand mal seizure. It was a full blown fit, had to suspend driving license and everything.

Neurologist put it down to the medication and stopped it. Fine except that coming off it was worse than being on it, I suffered night terrors, hallucinations and far worse. If it hadn't been for DP (and it was a new relationship at the time) I wouldn't have got through it.

I know it's prescribed quite regularly and I'm sure it's very effective for some people and I don't want to scare you, just be careful and make sure you are monitored.

After 16 days of 1 a night I took 2 a night last night. I was meant to do it after 14 days but lost track of days. This morning I woke up with a really stiff neck and I am having trouble fully turning my head. I heard my neck sort of go last night too. I guess coincidence?
