Does anyone take prednisolone, or have done in the past and can talk to me about it please?

I have been prescribed it for a week for inflammation in my chest/ribs, I have to take a 50mg dose.

My GP said to take both tablets at once after my main evening meal, but in the chemist they said this would be foolish, as the tablets can cause insomnia and I would be up all night. They said instead to have a very big breakfast and take them in the morning.

The thing is I can't eat a breakfast in the morning, especially a big one, the thought turns my stomach, so I was wondering about maybe taking them after lunch. So, I just wanted to ask anyone who has experience of taking them how bad the insomnia can be?

Also did you get any other side effects? I honestly seem to get every side effect going from any medication I take and the list of side effects for these seem quite worrying, but I am hoping if I only have to take them for a week it shouldn't be too bad.

So any advice/experience, would be great

I had to take it for allergies a couple of weeks ago - take it as soon as possible after breakfast. I didn't get much sleep for the week I was on it. It was not great. I was quite hyper, pretty nuts according to DH.

Also when you come off them you do get a bit crotchety. But the insomnia was the worst of it. Apparently they can make you suicidal but I went hyper instead.

Both tablets? I had to take six

Little red pills. Vile little things.

Have taken them a lot and never thought about the time of day to take them. Side effect for me was weight gain but that was following repeated reasonably long term use.

DD is on 10 a day at the moment and I have usually been on 6.

We have always taken them at breakfast, but not generally eaten loads - apparently as long as you're eating something, it's alright.

I've been taking 8 for 5 weeks. I don't sleep well, am swollen but am on other meds so it might be something else causing it. I take all 8 tablets in the morning with a cuppa.

I am crotchety/a bit hyper/agitated but it is combined with other stuff and I have just done a pretty serious spell in hospital too .

Just the steroids alone in the past haven't really affected me.

IME they are always taken in the morning to reduce how much they can interfere with your sleep.

I took them when I was a teen every now and then for asthma and don't rememebr any side effects except my Dad asking me if I was pregnant!

white little pills of madness, sleep deprivation and bouncyness, oh and mad evil mood swings. They make me very hyperactive and short fused. Bloody work though so will take when needed.
would recommend early in the day as it is a common side effect. could take at lunch but less time for effect to wear off before bed.

ElizabethWakefield · 05/05/2010 21:33

Mine are fairly large white pills 25mg each, not little red ones! Although I seem to be on a much lower dose than most.

Ok, I will try to take a breakfast or something to eat at my break in work (10.30am) at least and take them as early as I can. And I will expect to not sleep, become hyper, moody and nuts! (Possibly not too different from normal apart from the insomnia then )

Thanks everyone!

Bear in mind that milk counts as food in this respect - could you stand to down a milky coffee for breakfast?

oxocube · 06/05/2010 07:04

I took them for the first time a few weeks ago - I took one weeks supply of 30 mg pills, one pill a day and took them or severe asthma, alongside other asthma medications. No side effects here apart from the already mentioned insomnia. They were a life saver TBH and got me over a crisis period.

oxocube · 06/05/2010 07:05

for severe asthma
