Help anybody.......I know I've been putting on weight over the past couple of years, but not this much. I stopped exercising regularly about a couple of years ago but still kept on eating and drinking the good things in life..I'd like to loose 16lbs but am confused with all the "Diets"around - Atkins, Weight Watchers etc...
I started swimming again this week and have clocked up 124 lengths. Is a target of 1lb a week realistic? - has anyone any tips or advice they can give me??. I want to avoid a special diet if poss, as I would get fed up having to cook 2 different meals every meal time...Please someone Help....

I would say that a target of 1lb per week is defintiely realistic, in fact I'm oretty sure that 2lb per week is an 'acceptable average weight-loss', provided you choose the diet that's right for you.

Re exercise, don't forget that muscle weighs more than fat so you may be toning up and looking better but not particularly losing a spectacular amount of weight. Losten to me doling out advice like I know what I'm on about... I'm still lugging 1.5 stones of extra pregnancy lbs around 11 months later

Sonnet, I swear by WeightWatchers, I have been doing it for 9 weeks and have lost 31lbs, I have been going to the gym 3 or 4 times a week and walking everywhere, so this has helped alot, plus the biggest bonuses for me are on Weight Watchers you can eat ANYTHING as long as you allow for it in your points and they have also started doing a weight watchers white wine which is really nice and reasonably priced and is only 6 points a bottle instead of 12, (I usually save bonus points for a bottle at the weekend) I cannot go to meetings all the time cos of other committments so do it online for £9.95 per month and find it fab it's so quick and works out everything for you. Hope this helps

Chiccadum, everytime I read that I think WOW! 31lbs is fantastic, but in 9 weeks too. you are amazing and must have willpower coming out of every orafice. How many more pounds (if any) do you have to lose?

M2T · 03/07/2003 16:57

Chiccadum, WW Wine? What percentage alcohol is it? I drink quite a lot of white wine (4-5 bottles a week), so if I replaced it with WW wine then I'd be cutting calories intake quite significantly.

I have lost 7lb with about 14lb to go before my wedding in 17 weeks time. HELP.

fio2 · 03/07/2003 17:20

4-5 bottles M2T huh you're a beginner

A pound a week is realistic and sustainable. I would try to cut down on your portion sizes and increase your vegetable intake (carrots, broccoli, etc ) as they fill you up but don't fatten you up! Also try to have a glass of water before your meal which will help fill you up a bit too as well as hydrate everything which is ever so important. I did weightwatchers and absolutely swear by it (did not cook 2 meals just gave hubby larger portions) and have lost 2 stone 11lbs. Good luck

No bread, pasta, rice or potatoes after lunch did wonders for me a few years ago, I lost a stone in no time. Am going back to it after my Atkins crash course to get my preg flab off before holiday!

Chinchilla · 03/07/2003 20:49

Make sure that you have enough calories to keep you mentally satisfied, and do lots of walking. I am on 1750 a day, and make sure that I walk everywhere possible with ds, even in the rain () I lost 5lbs in the first week (mainly water though in the first week), and have my 2nd on Monday. I have 2 more stone to go.

1-2 lbs a week is the perfect weight loss, as any more leads to muscle loss, rather than fat. Make sure that you have plenty of vegetables and salad to top your meals up. I have these as 'free' calories (not peas, sweetcorn, parsnips or potatoes though).

Keep your meals interesting otherwise you will get bored and then hungry!

That shoud read '2nd weigh-in'
