Cracks in the corner of my mouth

Does anyone knew what causes these and how I can get rid of them? They are painful and unsightly. They are in the corner of my mouth only, on each side - the rest of my lips are ok.

How long have you had them? Vitamin deficiencies can cause this, as can impetigo!

nellie12 · 17/04/2010 19:06

could be a b vitamin deficiency or anaemia.
Have you been run down lately?

ImSoNotTelling · 17/04/2010 19:16

I have had this twice.

the first time was when my wisdom teeth were coming through and the dentist looked at them and said that they were all infected (bleurgh) and the infection had travelled forward and caused the cracks. Are your teeth/gums OK?

The second time was when I gave up alcohol and I think it was a B vit deficiency thing - try multivits + marmite.

Strangely DH got it recently as well... actually just had a quick chat with him and it coincided with him having a load of dental work that got infected.

I think you can get it from being run down generally as well? (maybe)

ImSoNotTelling · 17/04/2010 19:17

The other thing to do is bung some canestan on it, just to see. No harm done if it doesn't work.

strandedatsea · 17/04/2010 19:19

I had it from using an electric toothbrush - or the toothbrush made a small infection worse. Anyway stopped using electric one and it went away. Maybe the brushing was too vigarous?

i had this as a teenager, and oddly, found eating yoghurt for a few days made it clear up.

Campaspe · 17/04/2010 19:24

Thank you, I will try some of these suggestions

earlybird - maybe it was the live yoghurt combats thrush thing - and that;s what canestan is for as well

MrsBadger · 17/04/2010 20:05

mine was vitB

juneybean · 17/04/2010 20:12

I've got this at the moment, I was worried it was a coldsore but I don't know where I could have caught it from if it was.

I have been under the weather the past few weeks so maybes it's to do with that :/ I just keep putting vaseline on.

flibertygibet · 17/04/2010 22:20

I think it's something to do with a zinc deficiency...

I had this a lot when I was a child.

eat pumpkin seeds....

CaurnieBred · 18/04/2010 23:02

Def a run down thing - I had it when breastfeeding DD and was recommeded by HV to take supplements/health tonic. I found that sudocreme worked wonders too!

zen1 · 18/04/2010 23:09

Had this about 10 yrs ago, went to ask a pharmacist for advice as to which cream I should apply and was advised to see a GP as this can be caused by anaemia. I had blood tests and found I was severely anaemic. As soon as iron tablet treatment began to take effect, the cracks disappeared.

Kewcumber · 18/04/2010 23:12

classis sign of vit B deficiency (though maybeotehr things too) get yourslef down to GP for blood test). Are you vegetarian?

InThisSequinBraYesYouOlaJordan · 18/04/2010 23:37

My friend had this and her doc recommended Marmite - she bought herself a massive jar, had it daily and - bingo!

Kewcumber · 19/04/2010 10:31

but you really need to check which B you are short of. SOme (like mine B12) can be permanent and need injections. And it may not be B deficiency at all. Go to your GP and get tested.
