i've had it almost three weeks. thought it was going after a great day yesterday with almost no coughing but today it is as bad as ever again. really tickly, a bit chesty, and dreadful at night. i've had antibiotics but they don't seem to have made a jot of difference. cough mixture doesn't do anything. it's really getting me down now.

i've got it too. also had it about 3 weeks. sometimes I bring up a bit of phlegm (TMI i know), but mostly just tickly and annoying. You have my sympathy.

kissmummy · 12/04/2010 20:04

yeah, me too (with the phlegm bit). it's driving me mad.

me to me to its been well over a month now

ThatVikRinA22 · 12/04/2010 20:45

could it be acid reflux?

i had a persistant worsening cough until i ended up barking like a seal and choking inexplicably. turned out to be acid reflux. omeprazole saved me.

alypaly · 12/04/2010 23:14

ive just had this too....felt like id swallowed a bag of feathers or cotton wool. Wasorse when i laid down. Got a really sore area in centre of my chest and ended up in hospital with pericarditis....eeekk. At home now but still have this weird cough with gluey clear phlegm in throat.

Nikalah · 13/04/2010 15:18

Me too, you all have my sympathy - I've had mine for 2 months - it's just getting worse. Being 24 weeks prego I'm involuntarily peeing myself frequently too!

I've been to the docs 3 times - The second time was given antibiotics but they made no difference whatsoever. Now the cough is so bad I'm barking like a dog, have pulled muscles around my ribs, a headache from coughing so much and am constantly breathless.

Still the doc keeps talking to me like I'm a time-wasting, malingering idiot with nothing else better to do. Still back to the surgery again this afternoon.....

I wish I'd had a couple of doses of Kovonia when it started then I wouldn't be in this position now

alypaly · 14/04/2010 00:40

i have found that ipecac and morphine coughmixture is helping especially at night

purplepeony · 14/04/2010 15:58

3 weeks is nothing for a cough- neither is 3 months- sometimes they go on for weeks and weeks.

Unless you are wheezing or coughing up green phelgm/blood it will usually clear on its own.

alypaly · 15/04/2010 23:55

but why do i feel as if all my lungs are coated with feathers. It is a horrible feeling and quite unnerving. Had a few hot temperatures too over the laast 2-3 days. But no green phlegm....just this persistent hairy feeling in my throat and lungs.

Telesales650 · 16/04/2010 16:36

I had a similar cough to this last July and it lasted for seven weeks with three lots of antibiotics, then as that cleared up I was left with woolly ears with cataagh.
I went back and forth to the DRs but got no joy from them, eventually it cleared after thirteen weeks of pure misery

purplepeony · 16/04/2010 17:59

antibiotics do not clear coughs- they are a viral infection. any dr who gives you AB for a cough has to be sure you have a chest infection, not just a tickly cough left over after a bad cold etc.

The best you can do is suck boiled sweets, drink plenty, andmake yourslef soothing drinks with lemon and honey.

alypaly · 17/04/2010 00:17

oooppps ,phlegm gone a horrid green colour today and coughing like a horse.....feel crap

GrimmaTheNome · 17/04/2010 00:25

I've had autumn/winter seasons of cough - fortunately not for a few years now. Keep the air moist (central heating is bad, air conditioning worse). I found that the only thing that really helped the tickly cough was to suck a pastille almost continually, even in the night.

alypaly · 17/04/2010 00:34

the only thing which seems to help me is that ipecac and morphine otherwise i cant stop coughing.

alypaly · 18/04/2010 01:56

kissmummy.......has your cough gone yet?

Mine is dragging on and on.......had it for 4 weeks now and still feel as if i am full of feathers. Feeling really panicky with it again tonight. I am scared i have got somthing else. will it ever go?
Dont ever remember having a cough that has felt like this....if anyone else is the same please come and talk to me ,i need some reassurance

About a week ago got a really sore infected throat and the cough has come back worse again. It doesnt seem to be getting any better

upturnj · 29/06/2010 17:39

Hi there, I appreciate this is quite an old post but I'm my wits end with coughing and wondered if any of you found a miracle cure?
I'm 16 weeks pregnant and a bit prone to coughs since having phnemonia a few years ago. I'm not too bad when I'm at home but the air-conditioning at work is terrible for it. I can't have a conversation without coughing and have started being sick too + involuntary weeing with each coughing fit.
I hope you're all better now. Any tips on remedies would be much appreciated!

lightwind · 30/06/2010 10:51

I had one like that when pregnant - went on and on for over 2 months and I was miserable, so I sympathise. (Pregnancy evidently suppresses the immune system, so that the body does not reject the foetus - a foreign body)

Then my GP recommended steam inhalation - seems it helps to release all the stuff that gets clogged up inside your chest and tubes linking throat and nose and ears; plus the steam helps relax muscles that go into spasm when you have a long-term cough. It worked! And was pretty simple, just putting one's head under a towel, over a bowl of steaming water, twice a day. Good luck, hope you feel better soon.

upturnj · 30/06/2010 20:00

Thank you very much for your reply lightwind I don't know how I would cope with having a cough for two months. I have the kettle on boil and will be steaming my airways in a few minutes. Thank you again, anything is worth a try.

Magalyxyz · 30/06/2010 20:03

I used to get those. I'd get a cold, a simple cold, but it would turn in to a cough that lasted 8 weeks.

NOw I realise that coughing is a form of asthma, so now whenever i get a cold I take a steroid inhaler for a couple of days, and then when the cold is clearing up, that would be the time the cough would kick in. Having taken the steroid inhaler, the cough is hardly there at all and a normal inhaler such as salamol or ventolin relieves the coughing.

i only discoverd this about 2 years ago. After YEARS of taking 8 weeks to recover from a cold. It was the night coughing that had me nearly in tears. Awful.....

Just13moreyearstogo · 30/06/2010 20:09

Yes, I've got one of these coughs and get them every couple of years - they can drag on for weeks. I make a point of always coughing up the phlegm into the loo and using steam inhalation, with a bit of olbas oil in the boiling water.
