.. didn't go full square on to the eyeball luckily, just slightly higher, but nasty swollen and bruised eye lid and now he says he doesn't feel "quite right".... Bit anxious about eyes in this house. DD had both eyes operated on last summer, DS has only one eye that works properly (other one trying to catch up!) My dad could only ever see out of one eye and I am as blind as a bat so I just get a bit twitchy when it comes to eyes!

Could he have concussed himself, he does seem a bit out of sorts but says it's not exactly a headache.

Being male though, does not want to seek help or advice!

Can you ring NHS Direct for him? I would want to be careful with eyes, even more so considering your family history.

He really must have his eye checked ASAP.

In squash the speed of the ball is somewhere between 130 and 145mph and the ball is small enough to fit in the eyeball socket and damage the eye more.

He can get seen by his local hospital eye department (through a & e - there will be someone on call) or if he won't go at the very least make an emegency appointment with an optician tomorrow (no later) who can check the eye and refer directly to the hospital eye department if needed.

There are several structures in the eye that could have been damaged including a risk of retinal detachment with any injury like this which causes blindness if not treated immediately.

Tell him if an eye doesn't feel "quite right" it definately needs to be checked within 24 hours.Preferably off to A & E now.Wouldn't bother with NHS direct as he needs an eye specialist to look at the eye.

totally agree with nail.... go to A and E as the squash ball causes the most eye injuries out of any sport. because its a plaiable ball the eneergy within the ball travels through the eye and as nail says ,retinal detachment is a common injury from squash. My friend had it from a shuttlecock. They should check and see if the cornea is scratched too.
