bump

ilovesprouts · 10/04/2010 17:56

i think its something that helps you breathe ,

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 10/04/2010 18:02

Oh yes, I know that I just wondered what the reasons for being on one were, apart for trouble with breathing. And the likelihood of getting better.

meltedmarsbars · 10/04/2010 18:03

Is it CPAP?

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 10/04/2010 18:06

I don't know.

My friend has been on hospital for a bit now.

She has a mask for something and she said something about blood gas going wrong.

ilovesprouts · 10/04/2010 18:08

im sure someone will come along soon with the right info, sorry not much help hope your friends ok tho

meltedmarsbars · 10/04/2010 18:09

I wonder if it is oxygen, where instead of a mask you have a head canopy thing?

As far as I know there can be several conditions where one might be used.

Can you not ask her?

ilovesprouts · 10/04/2010 18:09

have you googled it !

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 10/04/2010 19:34

I haven't googled it as I am scared and she is in hospital atm and just sending odd texts so don't want to bombard her with questions as I know she is scared.

nellie12 · 10/04/2010 19:40

sounds like cpap so oxygen is being forced into her as she cant generate her normal lung volume to take enugh in. it also helps to eliminate carbon dioxide.

There are many reasons the body goes into resdpiratory failure, infection, not coping post op and respiratory or cardiac illnesses to name a few.
most people do find it a scary experience as it is tiring and claustrophobic.

if you want to know more i'll be back in a bit. kids getting ready for bed.

(people do get off it btw)

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 10/04/2010 19:41

She was very ill last week after an allergic reaction to pennicilin.

nellie12 · 10/04/2010 19:49

that explains it then.

anaphylactic shock entails the airways swelling up. which means she is having trouble gettinh the oxygen into her lungs(narrow airways)

I dont know the extent of your friends illness so dont want to start saying this that may not be the case.

The cpap is delivering the oxygen at a high pressure and also keeping the bases of her lungs open so that she can exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide.

The mask is very tight fitting and strapped over her head. If she able to text its not a bad sign even though she will be feeling scared.

meatntattypie · 10/04/2010 19:52

Never heard of a ventilator "box", have heard of a ventilator though.
So, have you seen or spoken to her?
If she is able to send texts she is very unlikely to be on a ventilator, but she may have a special mask on.

so, what is she in hospital for, origionally i mean?

meatntattypie · 10/04/2010 19:54

ahhh anaphylaxis, that explains it.

its just a temporary measure to help her, you defo do get better when on one of those, dont worry.

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 10/04/2010 19:54

I haven't seen her and we don't talk on the phone as she is deaf.

I am not 100% sure what she originally went in with but she had a problem with her legs and couldn't lift up her arms. She did go home but is back in.

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 11/04/2010 20:29

Just had another text.

There is a shadow on her lung and not enough oxygen in her body. She also has a vry bad chesty cough.

ilovesprouts · 12/04/2010 21:09

hope shes ok

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 12/04/2010 21:11

Thanks. Haven't heard anything today. More worried tbh.

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 14/04/2010 20:44

Yesterday she was having 30 minutes off the ventilator to see how she managed.

Haven't heard anything since.
