Wisdom tooth being extracted - is it as bad as I expect?

Going to have this done tomorrow and imagine that it'll be pretty grim - face swollen, can't eat for a week and all that - am I being just a bit ott?

Depends. If they are "normally" positionned or not. I had 3 out at once - one side was fine, swelling went down very quickly (under 2 days), the other side (tooth was pushing horizontally against the others) was not so good!

Don't want to scare you so won't tell you how long the bruising and swelling took to go....

Still, I lost a lot of weight which was good!

Impacted at about 30 degrees

I had one out when i was pg and i didn't feel a thing and was fine the next day (and i am a wimp who hates the dentist), it was less painful than having a filling.

I'd stock up on yoghurts to be honest....

Are you having a general or a local?

maggiethecat · 09/04/2010 17:51

I think it will be a local - not my regular dentist doing it but at the hospital and they have been very reserved with any info - called them today to ask if I could eat before op and they said I could so I assume local.

Is it a top or bottom wisdom tooth? Apparently the top ones are easier to extract, the bottom ones are nasty. Mine was a top one.

I've had all of mine at at the dentist with just normal anesthetic. Not exactly the nicest thing but better than I expected. If you can have some help to look after children straight after you've had it done that would be good (DH looked after DS and DD while I had one extracted at 8:30am and then went off to work straight away. Felt a bit rotten but improved).

maggiethecat · 09/04/2010 22:50

It's a bloomin bottom one. Dh will be having children for the whole weekend methinks.

Just had it out! Surgeon seemed very good but it still was nerve wracking. Perhaps I have very strong teeth bcos half way thru he seemed to be breathing heavily and I imagine he had to restrain himself from grunting while trying to prise the damn tooth out.

Face is swollen and time will tell how the healing process goes.
