Sudden outbreak of Hives

Rossco · 07/04/2010 19:29

I was sitting on the couch after dinner, minding my own business when I was suddenly really itchy on my neck. Then the itch moved to my torso, arms and upper thighs.

What on earth is going on? I have never in my life known an itch like this and the weals are still appearing.

I will go crazy with this itch and I've taken an anti-histamane (sp).

I need to scratch all over!

Something you've eaten [nods wisely]

Slartybartfast · 07/04/2010 19:32

fleas?

Rossco · 07/04/2010 19:34

Fleas? nope. Frontline is great stuff .

Honestly this itch is...well it's really, really itchy!

What have you eaten?

LadyPeterWimsey · 07/04/2010 19:40

This happened to me recently at the end of a course of antibiotics - the doctor was sure it was an allergic reaction to them.

Rossco · 07/04/2010 19:40

Nothing new Picante. I did some baking this afternoon which needed brown soft sugar but I've used it before with no problems.

I've had it for 14 months.
It'[s seems to be calming down a bit now, but i really do feel for you, that itch is the worst. I can still scratch until I bleed.

My doctor doesn't know what it is, they keep sending me for blood tests, but nothing is jumping out.
Mine started when ds2 was born.

Rossco · 07/04/2010 19:50

14 months of this itch?! I am in awe.

It's still spreading.

Could it be hayfever? My brother had a bad attack of hives randomly and turned out to be that. Never had it again, just milder symptoms and the hives went away after some super strength stuff from the docs.

SilveryMoon · 07/04/2010 19:54

The worst is when it's my head or my toe.
Does the area you scratch become swollen?
Mine does. Not pretty when I get a break-out on my face. I'll be fine one minute and the next, my face is massive. It happened a few weeks ago at playgroup

Rossco · 07/04/2010 20:00

Igglybuff - I have no idea but no sneezing or anything.

Silvery - the area does swell! I have a glorious red and white swelling at the top of my left arm. And on my upper chest. And on my neck.

I'm a vision to behold

Have you had any painkillers? Asprin used to do this to me.

SilveryMoon · 07/04/2010 20:02

hahaha, I can well imagine.
I really don't know what to suggest. I can't find anything to help.
Make sure all baths/showers aren't too hot, it makes it so much worse

Rossco · 07/04/2010 20:20

No painkillers. I wish I knew what caused it so I could steer clear.

My bath will be tepid at best in a bid to get rid of the itch. Had to take off my bra, the itch underneath was indescribable.

TMI?

Ooooo sounds grim!

Dustmites maybe? Have they invaded your sofa? You won't be able to see them though!

SilveryMoon · 07/04/2010 21:17

That's a good thought. Unlikely mine are dustmites. We don't have carpet, my sofas are leather and i don't think we'd have them.

SilveryMoon · 07/04/2010 21:22

Plus, if it was dustmites, wouldn't the whole family be affected?

Igglybuff · 08/04/2010 08:08

I think some react more than others to mites - they affect me as I have hayfever so already sensitive - I have to use allergy bedding. But my DH isn't affected at all!

Rossco · 08/04/2010 11:43

Don't think it's dustmites. Our sofas are leather and the carpets have only been down for 6 weeks.

Thankfully the hives were more or less gone by bedtime and the itch was completely gone.

No sign of them this morning either.

Very weird.

That is good Rossco I've as we 'speak' got an active patch on my shoulder. Very annoying!
Glad yours has cleared up, I wouldn't wish this on anyone.
