Breast pain, google is scaring me, has anyone had similar which turned out to be nothing too serious?

I started last weekend with pain right down the centre of my chest, sort of in my breast bone, it got increasingly painful, so on Monday iIwent to the Dr and he diagnoses inflammation in the cartilage between my ribs, although he wasn't sure why or what exactly it was and said if no better in a week to come back in a week and he would organise x-rays etc.

As the week has gone on, the pain has sort of shifted, my breast bone area doesn't hurt as much, it is still sore when i cough or sneeze or things like that or if i press it, but apart from that has got much better.

However, my left breast is agony, and has been for 2 days. Wearing a bra lessens the pain, but when I take of my bra it is so, so painful. I have felt it (a million times) and there are no lunps and it doesn't look/feel different (apart from the pain) but it is sore to the touch and sore even when not touching it. The most painful seems to be the area directly under the nipple.

The pain is also occasionally in my back sort of behind the left breast too, iykwim.

Googling brings up breast cancer, which terrifies me and I will go back to the Dr when it opens again on Tuesday. But in the meantime i was wondering if anyone had had anything similar, and if it turned out to be anything less serious.

I've wondered if it could be an infection, but as i don't really have other symptoms, I'm not sure it is.

Feel quite worried and trying not to think about it (not easy as it is so sore) so any similar experiences, reassurance, anything would be great

Step away from the Google!

Patient.co.uk is a very good site, used by GPs for info sheets etc, and this page has some re-assuring figures on the VERY low numbers of cancer pts from Breast pain, and does show that a lot is musculo-skeletal, and that period related pain can last up to 7 days.

Hope you get an early appt on Tuesday to put your mind at rest.

(I was on another thread here ages ago about stabbing breast pains, and we all agreed it was age/hormone related).

Thanks Milliways, I'll have a read through that web page

I am quite fortunate that my Dr doesn't have appointments, you just turn up and wait, so at least I will be seen on Tuesday.

I know google is not a good idea, but it is so easy to do when worried

EW, yes, I have had this (and it comes back occasionally after exercise/back strain). I had costochondritis (inflammation of the cartilage between rib and breastbone), and also went through endless breast exams, ultrasounds etc to get to that conclusion.

When I get it, its usually right behind one nipple - but its deep in my chest, not in my nipple, iyswim. It can be extremely painful - some people mistake it for a heart attack, its that bad for them (not me, thankfully, mine is more of a deep ache).

Do go and see your GP again next week, but meantime try Nurofen regularly for a couple of days, and try and rest. HTH until you get it checked!

Ooh, Elibean, the Dr did mention costochondritis, but from reading up a bit on it, it didn't really sound that much like what I have, but your post it reassuring.

Yeah, the pain does feel behind my nipple, but my breast is also painful too, do you get that?

The Dr prescribed diclofenic I took it for a few days and it didn't really agree with me, so I have been alternating with nurofen and paracetamol.
