Lump on scalp - worried

sunchild77 · 25/03/2010 20:46

Im really worried about skin cancer.

Its in my hair, and looks a bit like the texture, shape and colour of a man's nipple. (no jokes please)

Ive felt it for a wee while, but it has definitely got bigger recently.

Dont want to bother Dr unnecessarily.

Should I be worried? Anyone? Please am actually a bit scared.

You need to bother the Dr!! That's what he's there for and that's what you pay your taxes for! Go! Make an appointment tomorrow and go!

Go and see the doc. It could just be a sebaceous cyst - a blocked sweat gland. I have several on my scalp and have "bothered" the doc about all of them just in case. Totally harmless, and hidden beneath my thick, curly hair.

Dh had one - was a cyst. He had it removed - not much hair, you see! - years ago.

MaureenMLove · 25/03/2010 21:22

Funnily enough, DD has one at the moment. I'll be popping her to the docs next week, if it doesn't go by then.

MaryAnnSingleton · 26/03/2010 10:34

just go - you won't be bothering the doc - apparently it can run in families -I have a few and have had them lots of times -my doctor removes them from time to time when they bother me - a quickish minor surgery..only slight ewww thing is that the scalp can bleed a lot and I am very wimpy about that,so need to psych myself up. But it doesn't hurt !

Yes - get is checked out. Probably nothing but no good GP will object to seeing anyone with a skin lump they are worried about. But don't panic! If there is any concern the lump can be removed - five minute job, bit of local anaesthetic, couple of stitches. But then it's gone and will be sent to pathology lab so you'll know exactly what it was.

tink123 · 27/03/2010 14:08

It is probably sebaceous cyst. I have had one for almost 20yrs, gets smaller and bigger, never gone away.

If worried, get it checked.

LucyM6 · 27/03/2010 14:12

nobody here can tell you what it is, but please do have it checked, and get the Dr to remove it even if he or she doesn't offer to, and send it off.

The reason I say this is my friend had a 'thing' on her head and it was treated as a kind of ringworm or something, before they realised it was skin cancer. By that time it was too late, so you really ought to get it biopsied now.

LucyM6 · 27/03/2010 14:14

There are types of skin cancer btw - many of them are 100% curable but one type is not, and this is the one you would want to know about - though being blunt, if it is that one, it's unlikely to make much difference knowing what it is at this stage. (sorry)

The other types need sorting out and are not usually a problem.

MaryAnnSingleton · 27/03/2010 16:21

a doc would def know by just looking if it was a sebaceous cyst - it is most likely to be that but to be sure go to GP

nighbynight · 27/03/2010 17:05

Go to the dr, but its probably a sebaceous cyst - Ive got several.
