Experiences of DVT and after ?

Dad was found to have a very large (5cm) DVT at the top of his leg this week.

He's been discharged on warfarin and heparin, but I wondered what others had found starting warfarin to be like ? He feels quite breathless atm.

I know that he should ask his Dr, but he is a stubborn old beggar, and will do anything to avoid seeing them.

Am taking him for his INR tomorrow, so could ask them if there is anything in particular he should know.

Also, any ideas of the risk of the clot breaking up and causing a pulmonary embolism or worse ?

I will ask DH, but he had a large clot at the top of his leg. I don't recall him being breathless. I think the supposition was that "now they had found it he would be OK". His INR was monitored every day for a couple of weeks until it stabilised. He's now been on warfarin for about 4 months.

In the thrombosis clinic this morning, it was casually mentioned 'oh, you'll be a bit breathless because of the clots on your lungs'. Turns out he has multiple PEs on both lungs that no one thought to mention to him at the hospital

Nurse specialist was not happy that they had just discharged him with no advice at all re warfarin or things to look out for, and had told him to inject the heparin wrongly (and did it wrong themselves)

Thanks for the posts - I'd forgotten about your DH's DVT Mary

Sorry CMOT, hadn't noticed it was you . Spoke to DH (couldn't get hold of him earlier - he's been away on business) and he said that he'd been told if that happened to him, he'd been told to phone for an ambulance straight away!

Glad you got it sorted, but
