Contraceptive coil, how long after removal do periods come back?

I have had a coil for 5 yrs. Have been single for 4 of those years so thinking i might as well get it removed especially as they only work for around 5 yrs.

Was wondering how long it takes for periods to return to normal after removal? (Going on holiday in 3 weeks. Better to remove after holiday or before?)

Are periods normal/heavier/lighter after?

Also what's it like having it removed?

TBH I'm not sure which coil it is. Don't remember being told at the time but i think it is the non-hormone one.

I had my mirena coil removed in August and had a light period several hours later!! However my first 'proper' period was about 28 days later and was pretty heavy - after five years had forgotten what they were like! .

Several months down the line, my periods are now lighter but my cycle is pretty variable from 28 days to 33 days.

If you have the copper coil then my experience is that your cycle continues as normal, i.e if you have it taken out straight after a period then expect your next period to be 4 weeks later? Mine was removed mid cycle and I got my period as expected 2 weeks later.

I found my periods much the same as they have always been on the heavy side - certainly no worse.

Getting it removed was straightforward and painless - adopt the undignified 'smear' pose and relax - it's over in a matter of seconds.

Thanks. So maybe better to leave it until after holiday as it seems to vary as to when they return.
