When you move out of the area how long do you get to find a new gp?

Just moved a few weeks back. I have picked up forms at new docotors but not got round to taking them back yet. Anyway I need an urgent docs appt today, rang up my normal docs which is still only 5 mins drive away. They said the doc would ring me back, so gave them number and they said thats its different have you moved. So doc rang me back, and said they cant see me as moved.
Now I understand I have to change with not living in the area, hence why I picked up new forms. But dont you get a couple of weeks to get sorted particarly if you require an urgent appt and even though I need driving license or passport to change and they are still in a box somewhere. Or do you just get thrown out the day you move?

You need to make an appointment with your new surgery to be, they will see you as a Temporary Resident (TR) and you can take in your registration forms when you go.

Your old GP has no obligation to see you as you are 'out of area'. In theory the day you move, you should change GPs (as if!!) but in theory any surgery should see you as a TR.

It just took alot to ring the docs this morning and now I have to build myself up to do it again

We give our Pts one months grace, but they avoid telling us!

Once we are told, we tend to give them a few weeks. The only thing they would NOT do is a Home Visit out the area, but if being seen for something accute then notmally finish that, any referrals, results etc and then insist the re-reg.
