Contraceptive pill advice - have tried loads don't know what to do next

The pill, is historically the only contraception that has worked for me but I have tried loads of different ones and they all seem to make me really spotty.

I'm now on Yasmin and have been taking it for nearly 2 months but it is making me spotty like the others did. On the upside though I don't get any water retention or depressive feelings like I have on others.

As my GP is not very flexible about what he is prepared to prescribe I went to the FPC to get advice there and the doctor was very nice and said they would help me find a pill that suited me even if I had to try them all.

She said, though that Dianette is only really recommended for people who already have severe acne because there are particular concerns re: the increased risk of blood clots and possible link with liver cancer. My skin is absolutely fine unless I am on the pill, it seems. This made sense to me - I don't think the risk benefit would be worth it in my case and she suggested I try Cileste next, given that Yasmin does not seem great.

My question is, should I stick with the Yasmin for a couple more months to see if my skin settles down or should I try the Cileste now?

I would stick with Yasmin if it otherwise suits you and ask your GP for a topical treatment for your skin. I'm not sure that Cilest would be any better or worse than the others really.

I have been given Duac lotion for my mature onset acne and it seems to working quite well where no other pill (except Dianette!) did!

Thanks Sidge. Perhaps my skin will settle anyway? I probably haven't given it enough time. My skin isn't terrible - just isolated spots but I'm not used to it so it's annoying.....

Have you tried other forms of contraception? I'm in a quandry about contraception too at the minute. Think I might try the patch. I was on the pill but when I came off it last time it took 7 months (missed 6 periods) for my cycle to go back to normal, so not keen on going on it again and I also got pregnant on the pill. Saying that I know people who have got pregnant with condoms (even though there were no breakages or leaks), copper coil, mirena coil, contraceptive patch, injection, implant and diaphragm!!) Like they say to teens - the only foolproof contraceptive is to not have sex, but I don't think that's going to happen

I've tried loads of different pills, tried the patch and eventually got the implant and that was the best thing I have ever done! Maybe you should look at other contraceptives.

recommend the patch, left a message on nappy addicts question about contraceptive patch, for more info on it
