gecko has a chest infection
she is on amoxycillin

I guess the fact that she is feeling better could be letting her sleep iyswim

whilst she was really ill she was allllll night cough cough cough retch cough cough retch

so now she sleeping better and seemingly feeling alot better

but she has also napped in the day for the last two days

but she has slept much better the last couple of days too

so could the ab's making her extra tired or is her body just catching up lots

dont sound crazy!!

It's normal to be extra tired when on ABs in my experience, whether that's catching up, or being tired from healing, or from the ABs themselves.

thanks NQC and waitingforbedtime

so maybe I'm not crazy after all

I have the same thing Trinity! Am on antibiotics since Thursday and I went to bed last night at 8pm, just woke up at 2pm!!!!! I've had that awful wretching cough for 3 weeks and have been diagnosed with walking pneumonia, and under orders to sleep as much as possible. So I am and it is soooooo nice now not to be coughing (got heavy duty codeine tablets too!!!!) and feeling like death warmed up! Hope little Gecko recovers swiftly too

Antibiotics are a miracle, they really are.

JackBauer · 06/03/2010 16:14

SOunds like she is catching up now she can.
DD2 is about her age I think and she has a nasty virus and has just slept all day, so unlike her, but now I have got her temp under control she can sleep so she is.
Don't sound crazy, you sound concerned. Tis completely different thing

Heathcliffscathy · 06/03/2010 16:14

antibiotics knock me out! i am massively massively more tired when i'm on them than not.

you are not crazy at all.

TrinityIsFuckingTrying · 06/03/2010 18:29

what is walking pneumonia? sounds scary as hell
It has been awful
neither of us have slept, I've been really worried about her
the antibiotics have help really quickly

she slept fpr three hours today and the first night after three doses of ab's she actually slpt for four hours straight from bedtime

which is unheard of, she always wakes two to three hourly all night

I had to keep checking she was breathing

she is definitely feeling much better 3 days on

but seems to be sleeping more and more, I guess its like Jackbauer says

shes sleeping now because she can

she has had some awful temp spikes and the coughing was relentless

DS 14 had walking pneumonia last year. Antibiotics actually make him slightly hyper active and have done since a little. While he was on the antibiotics he was full of life but afterwards he went downhill and was very tired for about a month.

wrinklyraisin · 06/03/2010 22:32

According to the Dr walking pneumonia is "better" than regular pneumonia as your oxygen sats don't drop dangerously low, thus you're able to carry on almost as normal rather than be completely bedridden. I've struggled on for 3 weeks with it before going to the Drs and I was told off for waiting so long as my sats are low but not low enough for hospital thank god. So sometimes I think us grownups should go to the Dr sooner than we think we should. I have to swallow flipping horse sized pills now that make me gag and wretch and have coughing fits over. Wish I could have the good ole fashioned banana medicine! But the codeine is nice I will admit. She gave me enough for a week (disappointed potential drug addict lol)... the coughing is relentless and hurts, my ribs and tummy muscles are screwed. I really really feel for poor wee babies who have this and can't do anything but cry. It's really awful even though I have nothing but extreme tiredness and the cough from hell now. The Dr said I would be tired for a few weeks, I hope I get better sooner than that though, this tiredness is horrible to deal with when I have to work.

antibiotics knock out good bugs and bad ones so that can make you feel lethargic. It takes a while to build the good bugs back up again to normal levels. Then she will probably feel better when everything is in equilibrium.

ABs tend to make most people feel more fatigued. While they are often much needed, they also greatly upset the normal required ratio of healthy bacteria to bugs (as alypaly says), and put a bit of a strain on the ol' liver (the big detox organ). Probiotics (eg: live yoghurt - whether dairy or soya based) is always a good idea when taking ABs, and it's a huge shame more medics don't suggest this when prescribing ABs.
