Going for an endoscopy and colonoscopy tomorrow; stupid question, what to wear?

I haven't really been told much about what is going to happen and I'm not really that worried about it hurting etc but I'm a bit of a prude/shy and am worried about the nakedness of the colonoscopy.

Will I have to wear a gown, should I wear lose clothing I can whip on and off? Will it make me fart ?

Sorry, am not an expert but didn't want your post to go unanswered.

I think they will give you a gown to change into.

Is your appointment in a Day Case Unit type department?

If I were you, I would wear loose comfy clothes and put a light cotton dressing gown, spare underwear and a book / magazine in a bag.
Not sure you will need any of these things but it'd make me feel prepared IYKWIM.

I'd also give the unit a ring in the morning (if you have time) to check if they recommend you bring anything in particular.

Sorry, don't know about the farting.

Hope it goes OK

you may have a gown, and probably a blanket too

I would be inclined to go with Big Pants, loosish dark trousers and a longer length top/tunic. Sanitary pads too just to feel safe on the journey home? In case they have to erm erm erm lubricate or summat (I've had colposcopy, not the same because foof not bottom but same area ((down below)) )

Good luck NEL x x x

thanks both that really helps and has made me a bit less EEEKKK now. It's in my local hospital as an outpatient thing and it's likely to take 3-5 hours .

Book is a brill idea, I hate dressing gowns (am 26 so maybe that explains it) but a big long cardi would work.

Good idea with the spare pants! I have horrible post nasal drip and the worst sore throat of my life so I have this feeling it's going to be a horrible experience

Also I really don't like the DR! Oh well beggars can't be chooses and I've waited about 3 years for this!

I guess it depends if your being knocked out or not. If you are being put to sleep, then your be wearing a gown, so just make sure you have some loose knickers that slip on easy after.
If your awake, what ever your comfertable with but i suggest a longer than normal top, it helps Your just be asked to take bottoms off and given a blanket.

Weird thing but take some boiled/cough sweets, for 2 reasons, 1. if your awake sucking a sweets helps pelvic muscles loosen so less tense, and 2. after a tube drop your thoart it is sore and cough sweets are best thing for that

HTH

hope it goes ok

They pump some air in along with the endoscope, this will eventually make its way back out again. Wear whatever you like they'll give you a gown anyway. Hope all goes well with both the procedure and the results.

navyeyelasH · 02/03/2010 23:47

lisad my throat is already very sore and sweets make it worse but I will take a bottle of water with me which usually helps, thanks for that tip! Do you mean long top to cover my front?! Hmm will have to have a dig!

Redbin, they pump air in means I'm going to fart? Great! Hopefully they will give me a gown that is what I would prefer TBH. Thanks for the luck and the suggestions everyone I hate these sorts of things!

had them was really horrible - whoever writes their leaflets that explains what is going to happen is full of shit!

They did give me a gown tho

Ask them to give you some medalzolam or another light sedative first, then you'll be slightly out of it, they should do this anyway. You'll be expected to change into a gown, remember your slippers. They normally give you lovely pants to change into. The medication to clear your bowel is often the worst part, it helps to rub a little vaseline on your bum as it can get sore due to all the times you go to the toilet. It will be OK, try not to worry.

navyeyelasH · 03/03/2010 15:14

belle I had them done today at 11.30. I was told it wouldn't hurt and I would gag a little at first so I decline the sedative but did have throat spray.

I actually had a sigmoidoscopy not a full colonoscopy but that and the enema (and it's after effects) were fine only slightly uncomfortable and nothing like as bad as the pains I normally get.

But the Endo - ! Never again without sedation! As soon as they took it out of my mouth my first words were, "you seriously need to change the wording of your parent info leaflets!".

I'm sorry I didn't see your thread until today.

At least it's all over now.

Telesales650 · 04/03/2010 16:05

Thanks for the warning I will certainly remember your expierence

BlingLoving · 04/03/2010 16:35

I'm sorry that I only saw this now - I would have told you to request more sedation. They're horrible. But I'm glad you're feeling better now. I always tell people to take more than just the throat spray. Otherwise the experience isn't great.

navyeyelasH · 04/03/2010 18:16

If I had to have them again tomorrow I would and I don't think I would have the sedative. It didn't hurt or anything like that, but it was totally different to what I was told. Because it was so different, I thought something was going wrong!

Don't think it helps that I had a head cold and could barely breathe through my nose.

But yup all over now, had a crampy tummy yesterday so just had a nice slow day and then back to normal today.
