I want to bitch and moan and cry and scream about NHS dentists

because I am in agony

I have two fillings. Only TWO. One of them is huge, nearly the whole side of one tooth. And every 6 mths if falls out/breaks off and then gets infected and then I get an abcess and then the dentist refuses to pull it out and says 'oh its a perfectly good tooth, i'll just fill it again' and then 6 mths later it happens again.

And now I am sat here with a HUGE abcess in bloody agony with another appt tomorrow where she will give me more anti-b's and tell me to make an appt to come back and get it filled again.

Am I right in thinking that if I went to a private dentist I could demand that they just pull the bloody thing OUT.

Not necessarily - I had a similar problem with a tooth that had been replaced at huge cost with a titanium post and crown but was constantly infected, painful and vile. I went back to the dentist again and again but it never improved for long. I only had two fillings then too, but one of them had never been right.

A place with an NHS dentist came up when I was first pregnant - her first action was to whip the whole costly mess out. She replaced it with bridgework which has given no trouble for 12 years.

I suspect the first guy would have found it hard to admit that his costly solution hadn't worked. For balance, I've also had one bad NHS dentist - some are just better than others.

I think you need to sit tight tomorrow and have a conversation about how long this has been going on, what sort of permanent solution would be better, etc. Some dentists are more conservative than others and don't like to take teeth out if they can help it, but it sounds like your tooth is at the end of the road.

I should have said - good luck. Abscesses are horrible.

thisisyesterday · 02/03/2010 20:36

you can demand that an nhs dentist pull it out too.

You have just hit the sympathy jackpot mii. Play it for all you're worth at the dentist. I was due to have my bridgework put in on the day that I went into labour - with one thing and another it was another 5 months before my gappy grin was mended, but it was a lot better than the toothache.

nickschick - I knew there was a good evolutionary reason for the gag reflex. And where were your protective goggles???

thisisyesterday · 02/03/2010 20:58

seri9usly, it is your tooth, and if you request an extraction then that's what you should have.

Well I went bcos the corner of my back tooth chipped on xmas day - I went in January but for some reason he filled the tooth next to it?? anyway I became a bit concerned the whole tooth would crack so I made another appointment.....alas my regular dentist is off so i have to see another.

I go in

He does the diggy thing all around my teeth -vvv firmly I say dont do my front teeth cos my usual dentist says they might fall out (usual dentist is a bit of a comedian but im never sure where the joke ends and true fact begins...anyhoo its my front teeth so i not risking it) so what does he do.......pulls my feckin front teeth as hard as he can and declares them vv strong.

then with gums bleeding froom diggy thing he starts to drill to put filling in ....said tooth has filling from next tooth resting on it ......so that filling comes out .....he numbs it and starts to drill....stabs me in the lip with diggy thing....filling shatters and is pooping down my throat I start to gag so he pulls his hand in and fishes the bits out ...so as my dignity has pretty much left i have tears rolling down my cheek blood all around my mouth and now drool........he instructs the nurse to sucky it out with that little hoovery thing ,,,,,the fone rings the nurse jumps -said sucky thing latches onto my tonsil -i truly thought i might die....the dentist chats with his wife about lunch while I sit hyperventilating on chair half numbed with blood and drool sweat and tears and demon hoover nurse waiting ........

It was a bad day.

nickschick · 02/03/2010 23:14

as the nurse jumped when the fone rang - she nudged his hand so the mirror thing wacked me in the eye.
