Bleeding after insertion of copper coil

I had the Mirena coil removed 2 weeks ago and had a normal copper coil put in (I've put on so much weight since having the Mirena and just couldn't shift it).

I am still bleeding lightly and get sharp crampy pains when I go to the loo (TMI). Is this normal and likely to be hormones being in a mess after taking out the Mirena? Any experiences? Thanks.

Hi Parmageddon, I am a nurse manager in contraceptive and sexual health and can reassure you that what you are experiencing is totally normal.

You are correct that it is likely to be the hormones and should settle down but also quite common to have light bleeding following the insertion of the coil.

I would suggest that if it continues or the pain increases that you go and see your doctor or better still your local contraceptive clinic.

Good luck.

Thanks Dotty - I hope it settles down soon. I wish there was a simple solution to contraception!
