Can't go to toilet :-(

Two years ago I suffered a fecal inpactation and had to be rushed into hospital with severe abdominal pain. It was only then that I realised I hadn't been to toilet for weeks. (water was fine though).

Anyway they gave me "industrial strength" laxatives and I ended up on the toilet for about 3 days. I actually lost an entire stone in weight in one week because of how much came out.

Anyway since then I have had ongoing problems with constipation. I coped with it by using laxatives regulary.

But now, even they have stopped working.

I have not been to toilet for over a week. I have taken three suppositories, some granuals that the doctor gave me, senna tablets, movicol and asda constipation tablets all in the past few days and all I've had is a tiny dribble of diareah. I'm scared it's all going to happen again.

I'm even considering taking "an overdose" of constipation tablets just to get it out.

What is wrong with me?

Hmm. when you talk about taking something the doctor gave you then I assume you've seen him/her recently? I think you need to go back and ask how long you should go ie without any result, before maybe a referral for eg a scan to see what is going on. I'm sure that there are people on here with far more medical knowledge than me but it doesn't sound great if you are using suppositories without any effect.

Good luck!

I dont want to scare you but if nothing happens soon i would go to A+E and you will get an urgent referal to a colorectal consultant given your past history i so dont like your gp he needs to admit he has done all he can and send you to some one who specialises in this field good luck

loopylou6 · 13/02/2010 09:21

Agree, you need to seek medical attention ASAP to prevent a re-run of what happened last time. In the mean time try some lactulose and plenty of pure orange juice.

PotPourri · 13/02/2010 09:27

Linseeds are good. Adn you must drink tonnes and tonnes of water if you are taking all of those laxatives. If ther is not enough water, no amount of laxatives are going to get stuff moving if it is dry!

Enchilada81 · 13/02/2010 11:26

I took 3 constipation tablets last night (one more than recommeded maximum dose) and they're supposed to work over night and allow you to "go" in the morning.

So far I've had nothing but stomach cramps.

The doctor has referred me to a specialist before for a scan but I didn't go which is why I'm scared to ask him again. I know it was stupid to miss the apointment but I thought I could handle it

Don't worry about not going before, that's the past. Just ask again and make a promise to yourself and the doctor that you will keep the appointment this time (and do!).

You really need some help if overdoses of laxatives are not working.

Are you eating much? May seen a silly question, but if there is nothing in there, then there's not much to come out....

ppeatfruit · 13/02/2010 12:58

Get yourself checked out by the doc. of course and linseeds are good. You could also try cutting out ANY wheat from your diet for 6 weeks to find out if that is what is causing yr. problem. I used to have bad constipation and now no probs at all 'cos i eat rye bread and rice pasta (brown rice is best). If you do this please check labels 'cos there is wheat in nearly everything you buy. Good luck.

coldtits · 13/02/2010 13:05

you need to go to the doctor ASAP. You probably are impacted, and ignoring it will make it worse, not better. It's not going to go away. You might need an enema but if you don't go and get what you need now you might end up with surgery.

It's incredibly painful, miserable and humiliating for you, please get it sorted.

nellie12 · 13/02/2010 13:05

when did you last have your bowels opened properly not counting the leak you had.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 13/02/2010 14:35

If you don't go, you could start vomitting faeces. Think on, pluck up the courage and go to see the doctor.

MadamInEdenImAdam · 13/02/2010 14:59

Go to A&E or ring out of hours doctor.

chubbasmum · 13/02/2010 20:54

What you are suffering from is called colonic stasis and the diarrhoea is concealing an impacted colon caused by either in infected bowel or imflammatory bowel condition appologies about the comment i made about your gp.Go to A+E as i said yesterday

topsi · 13/02/2010 20:58

you could try regular colonics in the future to prevent the problem from getting to a crisis point

rabbit54 · 14/02/2010 21:44

sesame seeds with husks still on - two tablespoons three times a day i believe would shift most pooh. they must have husks on so brown not white. i use to eat four to five spoons a day in yoghurt and they really worked

alypaly · 14/02/2010 23:04

if you take senna and other laxatives too regularly they can make your bowel lazy and incompetent...and the worst case scenario they wont work. If you have such a bad problem, dont buy the laxatives as the doc should know how much you are taking. I personally wouldnt take Asda laxatives and senna too. What the doc should do,is increase the movicol to about 8 sachets a day. It should be dissolved in 2pints of water and drunk over a period of 6 hours.

Purgatives are irritant to the bowel and they are the ones that make you bowel lazy.Go and see doc so that he can monitor whats going on

purplepeony · 15/02/2010 09:07

simple question- are you doing all the right things re. diet and exercise?
we ought to eat about 30 grams fibre a day- most people don't get to half of that- you can google to find fibre content of all fodds.

Also you need to drink plenty of water, and EXERCISE. the gut needs exercise to help it move- at least 30 mins walking or other exercise a day. if you sit at home/work all day and do nothing, your intestines get lazy and bunged up.

It is important not to rely on any kind of laxative as they make your gut lazy- it won't work of its own accord.

It is also important that you get this sorted, as long term constipation makes you more prone to colon cancer, as the toxins from the faeces build up and irritate the bowel. Long term this can cause malignant changes.

Please see your dr but also think about what you are doing to help yourself long term.

minipie · 06/09/2010 18:12

Hi smelly, this is an old thread, you would probably do better to start your own new thread on your issue? Sorry I don't have any advice for you.

A1980 · 06/09/2010 22:08

I see that this an old thread but I see a suggestion missing.

When I have that sort of problem, the only thing I find that works is milk of magnesia. It's such an old school over the counter medicine that no one thinks of it. It's extremely effective very quickly though! Take it at night and you'll notice the difference in the morning!

Chathura · 29/07/2018 03:33
