yesterday I got up and was covered in hives, took a priton tablet and the hives went down, was left with lumps, but then my knees, elbows, and fingers all ached. Took a painkiller and went to bed, got up today with more hives on my arms and legs, my fingers had swollen so badly that I had to get my rings off quickly. My pointer finger won't straighten now, and my joints are hurting so much. Am off to GP at 11am. I had this before about 5 years ago and it got so bad that I couldn't walk as the balls of my feet had hives on them. I remember having tests to check my kidneys and heart hadn't be damaged, but can't remember exactly what the GP said it was.

Maybe a reaction to something? I had something similar post operatively when I had a reaction to a drug. Or possibly a viral infection. Doctor seems essential. Hope they're able to sort it quickly for you.

Arrghh!! went to GP who gave me Fexofenodine took one at 6pm and the hives are worse now, its had no effect on them at all. My fingers have swollen, my hands are completely red, I itch so much

It sounds like an allergic reaction. Can you call NHS direct?

SparklyGothKat · 03/02/2010 00:54

called NHSdirect, callback time is 3-6 hours!! will go to the dropin clinic if it get worse, back to GPs tomorrow as well, oh joys...
The GP thinks its a reaction to the virus I had last week, basically my body has gone into overdrive and attacking my skin.

I hope it calms down. Do call NHS direct if it gets worse or go to A&E.

if it doesnt go....ask the Gp about angioedema as this is associated with hives, urticaria and joint pain....Allergic reactions in my experience dont always cause joint pain. Has anyone else in your family ever had anything similar.

Have you got ay other symptoms anywhere else, have you recently been to the dentist or have you eaten something like peanuts, strawberries or prawns in the last few days.

SparklyGothKat · 03/02/2010 05:45

thanks no peanuts, can't stand strawberries and ate prawns nearly 2 weeks ago. no densist either.

am awake, not because I itch, but because Dd1 decided she was awake so the rest of us should be Hives are still here though, my skin feels so tight now as still swollen

I took an antihistimine when I had them and that helped - you don't have to take piriton as that can make you sleepy. Ask a pharmacist for a non drowsy one. Go back to the Doctor pronto. Sounds really miserable to be like that.

BlackLetterDay · 03/02/2010 10:27

My dp had this last week, same thing . He went to the gp who gave him antihistamines which didn't work. He then went back and got steriods for 5 days which did work, the dr said it was an allergic reaction to some kind of sweetner or something. No idea how he knew tbh but it had a fancy name which dp has now forgotten lol.

hives are slowly going down, been back to GP, they have given me some painkillers for the pain. The GP touched my leg to see the hives and I nearly hit the roof, it was so tender. Hopefully its going now anyway

That's good - wonder what's causing it though? What did the GP think?

alypaly · 04/02/2010 01:26

hives dont normaly cause pain to hat degree.
I was wondering if you had recently had anti biotics(penicillin)

SparklyGothKat · 04/02/2010 18:40

no anti biotics recently. The hives have gone now and so has the pain, thank god, but yesterday I had hives on the soles of my feet, and on the palms of my hands, it hurt so much to even walk. I hope they stay away now.
