DH has terrible cough which is now making him sick

DH had a cold which turned into persistent cough during December which has now returned. Since 7am this morning he has been coughing non stop and been sick with it several times. I have phoned NHS24 who as usual advised very busy and have requested a call back but probably not within 4 hrs.

Thought would ask in meantime if anyone else had this type of cough and what medicine or natural remedy helped ease it?

Any pain?

He's had some general aches and pains cold/flu like. NHS24 ruled out swine flu as he doesn't have temperature but said would need to speak with nurse for further diagnosis.

Has he got a pain in his chest?

He says has pain but not in chest just pain as if he strained muscle around ribs from coughing and retching.

if you're becoming concerned with his condition for whatever reason you should phone NHS24 back and they'll re-assess. and you shouldn't wait longer than 3 hrs for call back- that's the lowest priority. (i work there)

have you tried steaming for his cough- sitting in bathroom with shower on?

is the pain under his ribs?

if so you should give them a call back and tell them that.

He phoned them for reassessment just as they tried to phone him. He speaking to nurse just now who told him to go to minor aliments and get something over counter.

I have had exactly this - a cold in Dec that took ages to go away and a cough that returned and was making me retch last weekend. Horrid.

My GP prescribed a strong syrup to stop the coughing (but which also sends me to sleep so can only take it in the evening)

Next step next week will be chest x-ray and blood tests for whooping cough, apparently (n adults it doesn't always ahve the characteristic whoop - a friend had it last year and it took ages to diagnose)
